Using CBD to Treat Eczema

Using CBD to Treat Eczema: What You Should Really Know

Eczema just might become the devil one day. Nearly everyone has had at least one breakout throughout their life, whether they like to admit it or not. Eczema is a condition that causes itchy, red and dry skin patches to manifest on a person’s body. Cases can be as negligible as a small bug bite, to severe irritation that could limit movement and cause unwavering pain. If you have been struggling to treat your eczema by conventional means, it may be time to give CBD-infused treatments a shot.

This article will go over why typical treatments for eczema may not be optimal, and how/what CBD products are good alternatives.

What causes eczema?

There’s actually seven different types of eczema, each brought about and identified by its “triggers.” Eczema triggers could be irritants or allergens, like genetic factors, environmental exposure and loss of blood flow in a given part of the body.

Here’s the names of the seven types of eczema.

  • Atopic dermatitis
  • Contact dermatitis
  • Neurodermatitis
  • Dyshidrotic eczema
  • Nummular eczema
  • Seborrheic dermatitis
  • Stasis dermatitis

If you’ve had a small bout of eczema before, it’s likely it was atopic/contact dermatitis. These types are all of different severity and cause, but all eczema causes itchy, rough, patches of dry skin, inflammation, and sometimes swelling.

Always contact a medical professional to determine which type you have so you can follow up with proper treatment. Feel free to ask them about CBD topicals as well, but don’t be surprised when they try to sell you pharmaceuticals instead.

How Standard Treatments Fall Short, Where CBD May Not

9/10 times, topicals are the go-to solution for eczema. While these treatments present an abatement to irritation, they also have the tendency to inhibit skin’s ability to maintain moisture. By impacting homeostasis in the region, topicals can make the skin weaker once they have dissipated, as an absence of natural moisture increases the chances of another breakout being triggered.

Lotion also, while a popular on-hand treatment method for dry skin, is not a great treatment for eczema for similar reasons. Water-based lotions evaporate rapidly, taking more moisture with them than they may have left behind. Picking the wrong lotion can often backfire and cause new triggers through preservatives and allergens. If you’re using a lotion, double check that it is oil-based and does not include lactic, salicylic or glycolic acids or fragrances.

You can always try petroleum jelly (aka Vaseline) or mineral oil, however their thickness does not make them great absorbers. Unless you’re a nudist, there’s a good chance that these heavier products can stain up your clothes or other belongings.
