This past Wednesday, MTV Cribs made a return to television. The premiere episode featured Big Sean giving MTV a private tour of his California estate. The reboot of MTV Cribs will feature other celebrities like Martha Stewart, Rick Ross, and Snooki in its eighteenth season.
The Beginning Of MTV Cribs
MTV Cribs first aired in September of 2000 and has taken on many different forms before returning to its original format. In 2007, new episodes were being filmed in HD, a new narrator, new graphics, and title sequences. Even MTV Canada had their own Cribs series. By 2009, the show had gone in and been pulled from broadcast syndication.
However, Cribs had a series specifically for the CMT network titled CMT Cribs made that same year. Simultaneously, MTV had a Teen Cribs version that featured normal teens that live in huge and/or notable homes and mansions. This contrasted with the celebrity factor of the original format.
After a year, there was a pseudo-reboot of MTV Cribs that consisted of new and old material. The main series updated previous visits, repackaged their early content, and only a few new episodes. However, without a focal point on new and relevant celebrities at the time, the series didn’t make a return in 2012. Being this out of touch is something that was clear for the whole network after the 2020 VMAs.
The Reboot Of MTV Cribs
Fortunately, in mid-2017, MTV did a short webisode series on Snapchat Discover that also included new episodes. It seems they saw their error in the previous revival which focused on repackaging and revival of old content and not on creating newer, fresher content. With a vertical video format and an intimate setting with the featured host, MTV’s Snapchat series was a huge success.
MTV’s ability to bring their format up to date with today’s standards for content programming is exactly why they are capable of doing a reboot of MTV Cribs. The premiere of the first episode did not disappoint the viewers. Not only did it feature a huge artist like Big Sean, but his mansion also included a nightclub by the previous owner, Slash. This week, we saw why MTV Cribs has been able to come back after first airing over 20 years ago. You can catch episodes every Wednesday at 9:30 p.m, ET.
