After clusters of social media campaigns, a petition, and adamant public pressure, Britney’s father, James Spears, is letting go of her estate. Originally given the role of conservator during a time when Britney was mentally unstable, he maintained control for 13 years.
Although he’s voluntarily stepping down from this role, James agreed to do so on the condition of a clean cut. He wants all pending disputes with regards to the conservatorship closed and settled in an orderly manner.
Fans of Britney as well as the pop star herself know all too much about James’ actions already. Just a few weeks before his stepping down, Britney started a petition to have him removed. Her recovery combined with the legal glue-trap that gave her no say over her own estate are evidence enough of James’ wrongdoing. Of course, that doesn’t mean his lawyers agree.
James Spears’ Defense
James’ lawyers continue to insist that there’s no real grounds for his removal. According to CNBC, they even have the nerve to say it is “highly debatable whether a change in conservator at this time would be in Ms. Spears’ best interests.”
A primary counterargument they used put the focus on Britney’s mother, Lynne Spears. While she took some involvement in the conservatorship, she eventually took her daughter’s side. Lynne is convinced James does not know how to align the interests of Britney’s estate with her own. “Absolutely microscopic control,” she says, keeps the assets benefiting himself first.
James’ lawyers proceeded to acknowledge Lynne’s near-total absence in Britney’s life, especially during the conservatorship. They take a book that she wrote about her daughter in 2008 as a way to accuse her of “exploiting” Britney.
“Instead of criticizing Mr. Spears,” the lawyers’ document reads. “Lynne should be thanking him for ensuring Ms. Spears’ well-being and for persevering through the years-long tenure requiring his 365/24/7 attention, long days and sometimes late nights, to deal with day-to-day and emergency issues.”
The next steps for Britney Spears
The bitter withdrawal of James Spears and his legal team is detestable and disappointing. Britney’s lawyer, former federal prosecutor Mathew Rosengart, certainly knows this to be true.
“We are pleased that Mr. Spears and his lawyer have today conceded in a filing that he must be removed,” he says. “It is vindication for Britney. We are disappointed, however, by their ongoing shameful and reprehensible attacks on Ms. Spears and others.”
This isn’t the end of the battle either, according to Rosengart. He and his team will proceed to investigate James and his colleagues for foul play and ulterior motives. There is no doubt a mound of dark behavior lies behind the millions he siphoned out of Britney’s estate. Valued at $50 million, she has repeatedly insisted over the years that her father exploits his role.
Though the legal battles are not over, it is good to know that Britney now stands on a better platform to defend herself. Regardless of her parents’ intentions, there is no doubt that she is entitled to her own earnings before anyone else. This is a big win for the pop legend, and we are looking forward to more good news.
