Can weed help with weight loss? You may be reading this and laughing, mouth stuffed with chips, cookies, and candy after an overpowering smoke sesh that made you ravenous.
Weed and Weight Loss
Cannabis is known to inspire the munchies.
In U.S. states where cannabis is now legal, there was a substantial increase in sales of “junk” food, which is loosely defined as chips, cookies, and ice cream. We’re not just blowing smoke! The facts are represented in this recent study.
However, as funny as it is to imagine stoners buying out the grocery stores, correlation doesn’t mean causation. The increase in junk food sales in cannabis legal states doesn’t mean that the weed was responsible for the uptick.
However, there’s research that sheds light on this phenomenon. There are two major cannabinoids in cannabis that work together.
THC has been shown to work as an appetite stimulant and trigger hunger. However, CBD may counteract the appetite-boosting effects of THC.

Does weed help you lose weight?
Studies show that cannabis could help you lose weight.
Using cannabis could actually be associated with lower body weight. Many people swear that smoking weed makes them eat less and even lose weight.
A lot of the buzz around this topic comes from a 2011 review of two surveys. The authors said that the rates of obesity were higher among people who didn’t use cannabis compared to those who used it at least three days per week.
Another study that looked into the association between cannabis and obesity in young people came to a similar conclusion.
Further, a recent meta-analysis sheds light on the correlation between using marijuana and body mass index (BMI). Cannabis users had notably lower BMIs and obesity rates, even with an increased calorie intake.
How does cannabis help you lose weight?
There are a few theories about this strange phenomenon, and most revolve around the benefits of Mary Jane. Experts have a few theories on why cannabis use is linked to reduced BMI and a lower chance of obesity.
Some key reasons it could help with weight loss are increased mobility due to pain relief, reduced alcohol consumption, lowered stress, and improved sleep.
Cannabis may interact with the cannabinoid receptor 1, which affects both metabolism and food intake. Very high amounts of cannabis may increase metabolism and reduce energy storage, resulting in a lower BMI in users. It may boost metabolism. Don’t believe us? Here’s the evidence.
Using cannabis won’t cause you to drop ten pounds overnight, but the health benefit of smoking cannabis may be surprising. It may help with chronic conditions, help address underlying factors, and allow for greater mobility and health.
More research needs to be done to really understand the connection between cannabis and weight loss, but in the meantime, roll a joint and enjoy the potential health benefits.
