The Brick City has a new cannabis lounge coming soon called Hashstoria. It will be located in a newly renovated four-story building at 799-805 Broad Street, Newark’s most famous intersection. The brand is co-founded by rapper Raekwon of the Wu-Tang Clan, one of the most influential hip-hop groups in history. If you follow the music group closely, you may have noticed that Newark, NJ is also where some of the “Wu-Tang: An American Saga” biopic was filmed.

Newark’s Newest Cannabis Lounge Coming Soon: Hashstoria
There were several hoops Hashstoria had to jump through before the company could start selling its premium cannabis in NJ. It was the structural integrity of the building they wanted to occupy and the state’s legislation that still needed to be passed concerning legal dispensaries with consumption sites.
The building isn’t entirely structurally unsound; however, the portion that Hashstoria will take over has visible flaws on the outside façade. The restoration of the building will be overseen by RHG Architecture + Design. Plans were presented in February to expand the left side of the building’s newly added modernized brick face. As a result, it would give the building a more unified appearance. However, before Hashstoria could open its doors, the company needed to be able to legally do business.

“There’s been a lot of change over time with this building. We’re going to have community art in the window that will be changeable. The existing window frames will be painted black to freshen them up and really stand out and coordinate with the signage.”
Rachael Grochowski, principal of RHG Architecture + Design
Currently, you can buy and consume cannabis in certain licensed locations in New Jersey. At first, the state’s cannabis regulatory commission accepted comments on the proposed rules for consumption areas in the state. However, the rules are now finalized. Also, according to the High Times, the commission has started accepting applications for consumption areas since March 18; specifically, from dispensaries already in operation or businesses that have their permits.
The Hashstoria Brand
The creative name for “Hashstoria” comes from joining the words Hashish with Astoria. For those who aren’t familiar, hashish is a compressed form of cannabis, and Astoria is a city in Oregon where a branch of the company is located. Under the Hashstoria umbrella is the sub-brands, CitizenGrow, Compliments of the Chef, Daddy FatPaks, and a fourth one coming soon. Additionally, according to the business’s website, the focus of Hashstoria is to produce top-quality products and an unparalleled consumer experience while elevating the cannabis industry.
Furthermore, the brand wants to share the healing and transformative power of the cannabis plant and is committed to fostering connections and building communities through the products and brand.
Other than the Newark and Astoria location, you can also find Hashstoria in Springfield and Gladstone, Oregon. Although New Jersey’s market is younger than Oregon’s, Raekwon has high hopes for the business’s success.
