The stigma around cannabis has undoubtedly been diminishing over recent years with legalization sweeping across dozens of US states. As weed becomes accessible to and discussed by more people than ever before, more US citizens become in favor of federal legalization every year; regardless of which way they lean politically. Though this can be observed throughout the country, a recent poll proves that this is indeed the case.
62% of American Adults are in Favor of National Cannabis Legalization
Rasmussen Reports reveal their findings from their latest national telephone and online survey, conducted on October 21-24. They asked 1,000 American adults if they are in favor of the national legalization of marijuana. 62% of American adults responded that they are. Conversely, 23% are opposed, while 14% are unsure.
In comparison, a survey from three years ago revealed that 54% of likely voters favored the legalization of cannabis.
The most notable data from this survey is certainly the support of the policy from Republicans. The poll revealed that 54% of Republicans said they are in favor of marijuana legalization. This compares to 62% of Democrats that are in favor, and also 62% of people with an “other” political affiliation.
The survey went further in depth to see if respondents prefer legalization to be a federal, state, or local decision. The poll revealed that 47% think that the federal government should be in charge. Conversely, 32% said that states should decide. Moreover, 11% favor local decisions on cannabis legalization.

A Closer Look at the Survey
It is important to know the backgrounds of the survey respondents to know whether this poll could have had unfair bias. Rasmussen Reports did a good job at diversifying the pool of respondents. 54% of respondents reported living in a state where cannabis is legal, while 38% said they didn’t. Additionally, this pool of respondents had an almost even balance of cannabis consumers versus non-consumers. 50% said they have smoked cannabis while 45% said they haven’t.
While the majority of demographics expressed majority of support for national legalization, there were two groups that did not. Only 40% of those 65 and older support cannabis legalization. Likewise, only 38% of those with incomes over $200,000 voiced their support.
