Ever since the legalization of medical marijuana in Florida in 2014, the cannabis industry in the state has greatly expanded. Nonetheless, there remains many restrictions when it comes to who can obtain a license, what products can be sold, packaging, and more, making this a tough state for cannabis companies to operate in. Despite the differences between Florida’s medical cannabis industry and the market in recreational states, popular adult-use brands are making their way to the southeast state. Following Cookies announcement, Las Vegas mega dispensary Planet 13 will also be opening up operation in Florida.
Planet 13 Enters Florida Cannabis Market
Planet 13, a vertically-integrated cannabis company, is presently in a definitive agreement with Harvest House to purchase their Florida Medical Marijuana Treatment Center (MMTC) license for $55 million in cash. This license authorizes Planet 13 to cultivate, process, transport, and dispense medical marijuana to qualified patients in Florida. The subsidiary of Harvest Health & Recreation Inc. will also be renamed to Planet 13 Florida Inc.
We are excited to introduce our best-in-class retail experience and portfolio of popular products to the Florida market and to continue to build the Planet 13 brand across the United States.

Planet 13 Obtains 1 of Only 22 Florida MMTC Licenses
At this instant, there are only 22 MMTC licenses in Florida. Holders do not have a limit on the amount of dispensaries allowed in operation, however. It is unclear whether Planet 13 will take over all 14 of Harvest’s FL locations or open up brand new facilities and retail storefronts. Either way, after seeing what they have to offer in Las Vegas, Planet 13 will surely offer a premium cannabis experience and products in Florida.
Larry Scheffler, Co-CEO of Planet 13, has announced that they have an eye on Miami for their first cannabis superstore in Florida. The team is also taking a look at properties in Tampa and Orlando. Wherever they end up, Scheffler says it will take about two years to get their first dispensary open in FL.
“Florida has long been one of our most coveted markets with over 20 million residents, 130 million annual visitors and incredible consumer demand already demonstrated in the medical program. It was important for us to enter the market prior to a transition to adult-use to put the pieces in place to capitalize on this market in both the short and long term,” said the Co-CEO of Planet 13, Larry Scheffler.
