Not even half a year ago, Nevada joined Colorado, Alaska, and California as the next state to legalize cannabis consumption lounges. And while the whole state will soon benefit from it, it’s certain Las Vegas is the best fitted for the concept. The first companies’ consumption lounges are slated for 2022, and among them is Planet 13.
The Vegas-based dispensary is more than just a weed retailer – Planet 13 offers an experience. Now, that may sound cheesy, but this is one of few dispensaries in America that could back up the claim. The 30,000 square foot building is worthy of superstore status, featuring interactive art exhibits, as well as viewing areas for cannabis cultivation and processing. The only thing that’s missing is a place to actually smoke the weed.
That’s all about to change, as Planet 13 announced their plans to augment the facility.
The Planet 13 Consumption Lounge That Will Smoke Up Sin City
Vegas isn’t a stranger to loosely enforced consumption. Tourists are often seen sparking up cigarettes indoors, or walking outside with liquor in tow. Despite this, smoking cannabis remains highly enforced and scrutinized. There’s currently no place to safely spark up, down from the sidewalk up to the top floors of resorts. The need for a consumption lounge in such a tourist trap is more than apparent.
So these lounges need to not only be properly filtered and stocked, but rather spacious too; and there seems to be no shortage of space in Planet 13’s plans. Their consumption lounge will become one of – if not the – biggest in the nation, with a base floor size of 8,500 square feet. The lounge also includes a so-called “grand staircase” leading to a 5,000-square-foot balcony.

Judging by how co-CEO Larry Scheffler describes it, the Planet 13 consumption lounge is like something out of Wonderland. “You take your shoes off, you dance in the water,” he told Politico, referring to a four-inch splash pool destined for the balcony. “You consume cannabis, and there’s 100,000 rooms looking down on you from the Vegas towers.”
Scheffler is confident that there will be “nothing like it in the world” when it’s finished. Assuming it all goes according to plan, it’s hard to disagree with him.
Cannabis Consumption Lounges in Las Vegas
Consumption lounges fit into Vegas culture like a branch on a tree. Alongside craft breweries, nightclubs, casinos, and already present dispensaries like Planet 13, they’re like a final piece in a big indulgence puzzle. As mentioned earlier, you can expect the first lounges to open as soon as the first quarter of 2022.
Regulators in Nevada may distribute up to 20 new licenses for consumption lounges by July, half of which are exclusive to social equity applicants. That said, it’s safe to expect about a dozen new, completely legal cannabis lounges in the state within the next half year.
