France just launched their first-ever pilot program for medical cannabis. They are working closely with Aurora Germany GmbH, who recently sent the first shipment of marijuana to France. The weed was sent at no cost, and neither France nor its patients will be charged for the cannabis. Up to 3,000 patients could benefit from the two-year trial. The pilot program is led by the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM).
“If successful, this pilot program could lead to one of the largest regulated medical cannabis markets in Europe.”

Medical Cannabis in France
Aurora agreed to supply medical cannabis from their largest greenhouse production facility on European soil, Aurora Nordic. They will transport the flower to France via their European distribution hub in Berlin.
Ethypharm’s French subsidiary, Laboratoires Ethypharm, is responsible for pharmaceutical distribution in France. Additionally, patients will be utilizing vaporizers by Storz & Bickel, a subsidiary of Canada’s Canopy Growth.

Although cannabis legalization is still very taboo in most of Europe, this development marks the beginning of a new era for France.
“The first prescriptions of dried medical cannabis as part of the French pilot program are a significant step toward providing access to patients and will support the destigmatization of medical cannabis in France.”
Aurora and Ethypharm first signed the agreement to sponsor the French pilot program in October 2020.
Many cannabis producers hope that they can use pilot programs as an opportunity to establish themselves in the European market in the years to come. However, experts believe that meaningful marijuana revenue won’t be a reality for a long time, so it’s a long-term investment for these companies.
