In recent cannabis news, the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has requested an increase in cannabis production. Based upon a notice posted to the Federal Registry, the DEA is looking to increase production of psychedelics as well. The purpose of this increase is to support the research and development of new federally approved substances.
Specifically, this increase in production applies to schedule I substances such as psilocybin, psilocin, marijuana, and cannabis extracts. The notice states, “DEA firmly believes in supporting regulated research of schedule I controlled substances. Therefore, the [Aggregate Production Quota] increases reflect the need to fulfill research and development requirements in the production of new drug products, and the study of marijuana effects in particular.”
This news is quite monumental as calls for federal legalization across the nation continue to increase. Part of the reason for this support is so that federal organizations like the DEA can actually study the substances in question. With the DEA supporting this research, cannabis enthusiasts will now be able to obtain official government-backed research on these substances. Additionally, this research could potentially lead to new cannabis or psychedelic-based medications.

The DEA’s Request Calls For Substantial Increases to Schedule I Substances, Including Cannabis and Mushrooms
The notice calls for a 500,000 gram increase in the production of cannabis flower, with a total of 2 million grams requested for 2021. Further, the notice requests 500,000 grams of cannabis concentrates. Additionally, the DEA has requested 1,500 grams in psilocybin, which is the psychoactive chemical compound found in psychedelic mushrooms. The requested increases are pretty massive across the board, which means the DEA is really trying to back this research.
The Drug Enforcement Agency’s notice follows a current trend that suggests an increase in support of legalized cannabis and mushrooms. While this is still an issue that individual states deal with, increased research could lead to federal legalization sometime down the road. More importantly, these studies could lead to healthier, more effective medications. The United States may see a pharmaceutical revolution following this research, and cannabis connoisseurs are absolutely here for it.
