After the smashing success of his last single, “The Middle”, Zedd returns to the spotlight with his new single “Happy Now” featuring singer-songwriter Elley Duhé. It’s been nearly six months since Zedd debuted “The Middle”, and the dance-pop ballad remains at the top of EDM charts even today. This new release comes with a lyric video directed by WE WRK WKNDS, who previously directed Zedd’s lyric video for “The Middle”.
“Happy Now” was first debuted at the Zedd in the Park a week ago, where Zedd brought Elley Duhé up on stage to debut the song live. Duhé posted a clip of the performance on her Instagram afterwards, captioning it: “Not gonna lie my [heart] is pretty full.”
“Happy Now” brings more fresh vocal talent to the spotlight with Elley Duhé’s electrifying voice carrying the track through a story of heartbreak told through the lens of her breakup with her ex, and the regret that followed when reflecting back on their relationship.
The lyric video pictures Duhé cleaning up her house the morning after a party, throwing garbage in the trash and walking outside to face the sun in the aftermath of the night before. This symbolism draws a clear parallel to the lyrics speaking to a broken relationship, and cleaning up the mess in the aftermath.
The track is much more low-key than some of Zedd’s discography from the past year. “Happy Now” begins with a strumming guitar, and its melancholic melody drifts through the track in a way that conveys thoughtful sadness and reflection. Zedd’s production remains top-notch, but his usual heavy kicks and layered drum work takes a back seat for “Happy Now”.
With the huge success of Zedd’s latest releases, “Happy Now” is sure to quickly climb the charts, and will likely hold its place for weeks to come.
