Insomniac’s first Lost in Dreams Festival succeeded in turning sin city into a melodic dreamscape. Over 45 artists came to perform at the Downtown Las Vegas Event Center for two nights of magic. Seven Lions, Elephante, Dabin, and more set a tone of uplifting energy through killer electronic music and mind-activating visuals. Respect My Region sat down with up-and-coming artist Yula after his festival performance to talk about his experience performing on the Lost (main) Stage.
Who Is Yula?
Yula is an electronic music producer currently based out of Los Angeles. He has plans to transition to his hometown of San Diego, where he got his start. Yula’s performance at Lost in Dreams Festival was only his third performance under the artist’s name, but his experience with music goes a lot farther back.
Before Yula, the artist was working on a successful project called Subfer. The sound and style of the music reflected the pop and future bass that he enjoyed, but something with the project wasn’t quite right.
“I sat down one day, and I told myself, ‘I’m going to make whatever I want right now.’ I’m not going to show anyone the song, I’m not going to release the song, it’s all for me.” And I made the first YULA song…It was like a new world, and a door opened for me, honestly…it was incredible and I’ve never been so into music in my life.”
Performing At Lost In Dreams
The style of music and overall vibe of the Lost in Dreams Festival made it the most ideal festival that Yula has been able to perform at yet. The artist didn’t have to cater his set at all to fit the interests of the audience; people attended hoping to hear the exact style that Yula specializes in. With his being entirely being original material, this was the perfect setting for him to start off the second evening.
“I make very melodic, chill, ambient kind of stuff. I feel like this festival, or at least the way it was marketed, was perfect for my vibe.”
The perfect linking of Yula with the vibe of Insomniac’s festival can be credited to the artist’s agents at UTA. The opportunity to perform at a festival that fits the artist so well allowed him to play exactly what he thought a Yula set should be.
What’s Next
Yula is currently working on a new album that the festival-goers got a sneak peek at. Half of Yula’s set at Lost in Dreams was unreleased music that will make its debut on the new album. Through his album, Yula hopes to embody the feeling of listening to live music; an immersive, invested experience.
“That’s why I like playing live so much is because you’re so in this world. It’s not like you’re doing homework and music’s on in the background, you’re here for this, listening the whole time.”
Yula has two upcoming shows in Audiotistic in San Francisco and Cancun. Follow him on Instagram and check out his Spotify and Apple Music pages.
