Whether you’re a daily cannabis consumer or have never touched weed in your life, you have likely heard a range of terms used for the plant.
Are Weed, Cannabis, Marijuana, and Pot the Same Thing?
While marijuana was the original term used, which is derived from the Spanish words mariguana or marihuana, there are nearly dozens of other words now used to describe the same thing. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the term “marijuana” was used widely around the world; however, American’s adopted the word cannabis more commonly, which is derived from the scientific term for the plant, Cannabis sativa.
The term “weed” came shortly after, surfacing around 1929. Additionally, the word “pot” came into use in the late 1930s. Much more slang arose as the years went on and the plant’s popularity continued to grow. Even currently, new slang terms are being coined to describe cannabis.
So, do weed, cannabis, marijuana, and pot all mean the same thing? In short – yes. Each of these terms is used to describe the same thing. While each of these terms came at their respective times, each is interchangeably used. It’s hard to say if one is more popular over another, but weed and cannabis seem to be the most widely used in current day.

Cannabis Versus Hemp
When referring to these terms, it is usually a given that the psychoactive THC-infused plant is what’s being talked about. However, cannabis is more than just the THC-focused plant, hemp (which is lower in THC, but higher in CBD) also sits under this umbrella. Nonetheless, CBD-focused cannabis plants are typically referred to as hemp or CBD, while these other terms are typically used to only describe high-THC cannabis.
