Darkwave electronic producer Verasect has unveiled his second single from his forthcoming EP Sleep Stories, “Catch Your Breath”. Sleep Stories, an independently released four-track EP, is due out September 28th. Featured on “Catch Your Breath” are Dave “Rave” Ogilvie (Tool, Nine Inch Nails) on the production, and Pete Lyman (FKA Twigs, St. Vincent) on the mastering.
“Catch Your Breath” manages to artfully combine the industrial, glitchy elements sprinkled throughout the track with the ethereal, soft vocals from artist Dominique. The result is a track that transports the listener to another world. While the deep, heavy bass of the track keeps the track grounded, the delicate vocals flit above track as if they will fly away. This creative composition of industrial drums paired with delicate vocals can be stylistically compared to artists such as Crystal Castles or Grimes.
When speaking to the inspiration behind the track, and its unique pairing of sounds, Verasect explains:
“When writing ‘Catch Your Breath’ I was intent on making a chilled out track and was drawing inspiration from Massive Attack’s ‘Mezzanine’. It started with a dreamy beat in a shimmery reverb but I couldn’t help myself and wanted to add a little grit from some vintage distortion pedals. I had the drive higher than I expected so this huge kick drum came surging through the speakers. It was unexpected and took over the song but I instantly knew that beat was going to stay.”
While the kick drum was somewhat unintentional in its addition to the track, Verasect has created a beautiful sonic experience by pairing the heavy kick drum with the ever-present “shimmer”. The result is an ethereal, otherworldly listening experience that can’t be missed.
