In global festival news, Ultra China has officially canceled their Shanghai event one week before it was scheduled to begin. The Chinese arm of the massive EDM festival was mysteriously missing lineup details for the entire year, sparking rumors early on that the festival would be cancelled or postponed.
Now, we can confirm that the rumors are true. Ultra China released the following statement confirming the cancellation of Ultra Shanghai 2018:
The organizers promise to hold an “Ultra Shanghai Club Takeover” event as recompense for the cancellation. Fans of Ultra may notice a pattern emerging – Ultra China did something similar in June after postponing Ultra Beijing. However, Ultra Beijing is going ahead with its rescheduled dates of September 15th and 16th. Its explosive lineup features artists such as Afrojack, Galantis, Zedd and Armin van Buuren among others.
For Ultra China Shanghai, it’s hard to say whether the festival will be rescheduled like Beijing, or simply canceled indefinitely. The fact that refunds are being issued automatically for ticketholders points to a permanent cancellation.
Is Ultra struggling in the Chinese market? It seems strange that the largest global dance festival would fail in such a popular destination for touring artists. We’ll have to wait and see how well Ultra Beijing is executed, and whether or not Ultra Shanghai will be resurrected. For now, only time will tell.
