Uber has announced that they will allow people in Ontario, Canada to order cannabis on its Uber Eats app. This is a huge step and marks Uber’s first foray into the cannabis business.
Uber Eats’ marketplace will list the cannabis retailer, Toyko Smoke, on its service this coming Monday. Customers will be able to place orders from the Uber Eats app and then pick them up at their nearest Tokyo Smoke store, as soon as within an hour.
Will the United States Receive a Weed Delivery Option Soon?
Uber already delivers liquor, and cannabis was the natural next step for the company. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi told media in April that Uber may consider delivering cannabis in the United States when it’s legal to do so.
However, when asked about the possibility of expansion into other Canadian provinces, or in the United States, an Uber spokesperson said there is “nothing more to share at this time.”
“We will continue to watch regulations and opportunities closely market by market. And as local and federal laws evolve, we will explore opportunities with merchants who operate in other regions,” the Uber spokesperson told Reuters.
This Partnership May Impact the Underground Market
This new development will allow Canadian adults to purchase safe and legal cannabis. It will also help the government combat illegal sales. Although recreational marijuana has been legal in Canada for more than three years, the underground distributors and producers still have a grip on the market. More than 40% of all non-medical cannabis sales are not through an approved distribution source.
According to data from industry research firm BDS Analytics, Canadian cannabis sales should total $4 billion in 2021. These numbers are expected to grow to $6.7 billion in 2026. Moreover, Uber’s stock market shares shot up 1.2% at $44.78 in premarket trading.
