On July 25th, Train brought its Drops of Jupiter: 25 Years in the Atmosphere tour to Mansfield’s Xfinity Center alongside opening sets from Barenaked Ladies and Matt Nathanson. The San Francisco native band brought the house down with a nostalgic and energetic set that leaned heavily into the songs that have kept up their success across more than three decades of music.
The night was already stacked before Pat Monahan and company took the stage. Matt Nathanson opened the evening and was followed by Barenaked Ladies before Train closed out the show. The lineup as a whole gave fans three distinctly different takes on pop-rock songwriting, but Train’s headlining set ultimately became a celebration of the band’s extensive catalog and staying power.
Train Starts Out Strong
Train came out of the gates swinging with “Jump Around,” the House of Pain classic playing before launching into “She’s on Fire.” From there, the band wasted no time moving through some of its biggest crowd favorites, including “50 Ways to Say Goodbye,” “If It’s Love,” “AM Gold,” “Play That Song,” and “Whipping Boy.” As someone who grew up listening to their music, it was a true full-circle moment to experience on their 25th anniversary tour.
The set became even more collaborative when Nathanson returned to the stage for Train’s take on John Mellencamp’s “Jack and Diane.” Later, Barenaked Ladies frontman Ed Robertson also joined Monahan for “Meet Virginia,” incorporating “Country Roads” before returning to Train’s breakthrough hit.
This moment felt especially fitting during a tour built around Train’s history. The band’s 2001 album Drops of Jupiter remains a defining point in its career, and the anniversary tour has allowed the group to revisit the material that transformed Train from a San Francisco rock band into a worldwide success.
To put it simply, their Mansfield performance was not only a nostalgia trip. It was certainly much more than many would expect
“Calling All Angels” brought a more reflective moment to the set before Train introduced “To Gloria,” a new song that marked its first documented live performance at the Xfinity Center. The band then moved into “Mississippi” and “Marry Me,” continuing to balance its catalog of emotional ballads with its more upbeat material.
The surprises continued with “Stone in Love,” the Journey classic performed with Pat Monahan’s son. Train then returned to its own catalog with “Save Me, San Francisco,” “Angel in Blue Jeans,” and “Bruises.”
By the time “Hey, Soul Sister” arrived, the set had become a full-scale trip through Train’s radio history. The band followed it with “Drive By,” incorporating “Hey Jude,” before closing with the song that gave the anniversary tour its name: “Drops of Jupiter.”
Capping Off The Evening
That final stretch perfectly summarized what Train accomplished in Mansfield. Rather than relying on one era or one defining hit, the band moved freely through songs spanning its career, from Drops of Jupiter and Save Me, San Francisco to its newer material.
Train has spent more than 30 years turning their songwriting into massive singalong records. At the Xfinity Center, those songs became something bigger than their original recordings. They served as snapshots of different moments in listeners’ lives, brought together under one stage and one summer night. It was truly a marvel to experience it all in person. So many years of hits and artist development culminated in one fiery evening of celebration.
For a band celebrating 25 years of Drops of Jupiter, their show in Mansfield proved that Train’s biggest strength may not be looking backward. It is showing just how much of its past still has a place in the present and future.
