The black sheep of Massachusetts hip-hop, Token, has arrived with his debut studio album Pink Is Better, with backing from Atlantic Records. The “Doozy” rapper has beaten down the “YouTube rapper” stereotype and has proven he can actually spit. But, can he make comprehensive music that connects with people? My answer is, he’s getting there.
Having been a viral commodity in YouTube’s music scene for some time now, it’s only fitting that Token takes that final step and leaps into the unknown of mainstream media and music business. Fans of his have seen this coming for awhile now. In 2019, he released his track “YouTube Rapper” featuring Tech N9ne and if that wasn’t enough of a signal, Token straight up says he’s “way more than a YouTube rapper,” letting us now he’s got plans.
Well, those plans are now coming to fruition.

An Album Of Compromises
Pink Is Better is like a match of dueling pianos, the coming together of Token’s two personalities at odds with each other; symbolized by the white and the red that makes up the color pink. The white is emotional and thoughtful, taking some time to break down and figure out. The red, however, is pure vitriol and rage that can be hidden deep down in anyone but is easily recognizable. By bringing these two sides together, you get pink, where Token finds that “pink is better.”
Reaching middle ground, Token compromises with himself to create something he hopes will make everyone happy. He pushes the boundaries of standard song structures with a boldness not usually seen on an artist’s major debut. He carries entire tracks without a hook or a chorus and instead tells his story with unrelenting honesty.
Opening the door all the way, Token talks about his past transgressions and regrets as a lover in a relationship in tracks like “Caught On Camera” and “IOD.” With a lot of his subject matter being around those mistakes and cheating on his girlfriend, it gets almost awkward at times.
A Range of Impressive Features
But, with that being said, it seems Atlantic came through with the resources and helped get some dope features such as JID, Rico Nasty, and Benny The Butcher on the project, who add some much needed weight.
Pink Is Better is a solid album that shows a high level of creativity and skill from Token. There’s no doubt in my mind that he will be a name that hangs around and does well for himself. However, this album might be more of a personal success for Token than an end of the year nominee. Nonetheless, it is an enjoyable listen worth checking out.
