WaMu Theater was packed to capacity Saturday night for the Seattle stop on Rezz‘s Certain Kind of Magic tour. Along with openers 1788-L and AC Slater, the show was filled with bass-thumping bangers that rocked the crowd. Despite being a fairly long show – clocking in around four hours – the energy in the crowd never wavered.
Respect My Region writers were able to score a spot in the front row where we got a great view of the artists for all three sets.
The first opener, 1788-L, nearly stole the show with their high-energy set.
1788-L is fairly new on the electronic music scene, having just released their first EP, S E N T I E N C E, last month. The mysterious electronic artist has a style that is reminiscent of the dawning ages of dubstep. Their ground-shaking drops and incredible use of vocal samples sprinkled throughout their tracks makes for a diverse, high-energy performance.
After 1788-L’s set, fans in the crowd were remarking to each other that it was one of the strongest opening sets they’d ever seen. This sentiment seemed to resonate with a lot of fans – 1788-L had delivered a headline-worthy performance in their one-hour set. The time seemed to fly by, due to the excitement and fresh energy they brought with each new track.
The next act, AC Slater, brought a much different vibe after 1788-L’s high-energy performance.
AC Slater’s style, as fans may know, has a bass-heavy house vibe. His performance took the wild vibe from 1788-L’s set and dialed it down a couple notches, turning the WaMu crowd into a jam-packed rave. His set acted as a perfect buffer between the experimental sounds that 1788-L and Rezz have in their music. The crowd loved his heavy drops and extraordinary live mixing skill on stage.
When Rezz took the stage just past 11 pm, the energy in the crowd was electric.
She experienced a short technical glitch in the first few minutes of the performance, but handled it with ease, joking: “Well that was a great start!” After restarting, she opened with “Life and Death” from Certain Kind of Magic. The crowd went wild as red lasers descended on the audience, and columns of steam shot out from the stage.
Rezz treated her Seattle fans to at least two confirmed new tracks in her set. Her newest music sounds as if she is expanding her range of instruments, leaning into her recent exploration of using electric guitar in her tracks. Her bass drops are just as heavy as ever; the barrier at the front of the crowd shook for the entire hour-long performance as fans jumped to the rhythm of her music.
A particularly breathtaking moment during Rezz’s set was when she asked the crowd to sing along to her track “Toxin.” Even though Rezz rarely uses vocals in her music, the entire crowd seemed to know the words from the newly-released song.
Rezz told the crowd that this was her biggest headlining show she’s ever done, at 9,000 attendees. She asked her audience if she should do her next show at the Gorge. “Would you guys actually go?” she asked. “YES!” they screamed in reply.
The show ended around 1 AM, and the crowd was just as hyped at the end as they were at the start.
The entire show was jam-packed with raw, unabashed talent, all of the acts delivering the first-class night. The Certain Kind of Magic tour is certainly something special.
Dance and electronic fans were treated to a rare treat Saturday night with three incredible acts in a single evening. All three performers will undoubtedly be selling out many more shows in Seattle when they return. Attendees poured out into the Seattle streets in a happy daze, feeling that certain kind of magic that this tour is delivering all over the nation.
