For nearly a decade, Rawrrzone Media has worked to prove that meaningful influence cannot always be measured through follower counts, viral clips, or corporate advertising budgets.
Founded by Queens-based photographer, journalist, and media entrepreneur Katy, Rawrrzone Media is an independent multimedia platform covering music, sports, entertainment, lifestyle, and community stories. Its growing content ecosystem includes editorial features, event coverage, multimedia productions, and the flagship interview series Welcome to the Rawrrzone.
The platform’s mission is centered on amplifying emerging artists, entrepreneurs, athletes, community leaders, and other voices that may be overlooked by mainstream media.
“At its core, Rawrrzone is about giving people a seat at the table and helping tell stories that might otherwise go unnoticed,” Katy explained.
From NYC Untold to Welcome to the Rawrrzone
Rawrrzone Media grew from Katy’s experiences as a photographer, journalist, public relations professional, and content creator.
In 2015, she launched a blog called NYC Untold, which focused on underground talent and stories that were not receiving enough attention. Although personal challenges prevented her from investing everything she wanted into the original platform, the concept established the foundation for her future work.
The turning point arrived when she was given the opportunity to host her own radio show. That opportunity became Welcome to the Rawrrzone, an interview series created to provide independent artists and creatives with the visibility, support, and substantive conversations Katy felt were missing from the industry.
What began as a radio and interview program eventually expanded into Rawrrzone Media.
“As the platform grew, so did the vision,” she said. “What started as an interview show evolved into Rawrrzone Media, a multimedia platform focused not only on entertainment, but also on building community, creating opportunities, and using media as a tool to uplift voices that deserve to be heard.”
Creating the Platform She Wished Had Existed
When Katy launched Welcome to the Rawrrzone nearly nine years ago, internet radio and digital entertainment coverage were expanding. However, she saw relatively few independent networks consistently investing in emerging talent and underrepresented voices.
Major platforms frequently prioritized celebrities, established artists, viral moments, and stories capable of generating immediate advertising revenue. Independent musicians, entrepreneurs, community leaders, and creators often struggled to receive meaningful coverage without a major label, established media connection, or trending moment behind them.
Katy had experienced that challenge herself.
“I wanted to build a platform that focused on discovery, storytelling, and community rather than simply following the biggest headlines,” she said. “In many ways, Rawrrzone was created to be the platform I wish had existed when I was beginning my own journey as a photographer and journalist.”
Rawrrzone covers mainstream entertainment when it makes sense, but the platform’s editorial decisions remain grounded in the people behind each story. Its interviews examine guests’ personal journeys, the lessons audiences can learn from them, and how those experiences connect with the current cultural climate.
A Childhood Interest in Media Becomes a Career
Katy’s interest in media began long before Rawrrzone.
Growing up in a strict Greek household, she was often restricted from exploring pop culture, hip-hop, rock music, and professional wrestling. She compares the experience to Lane Kim from Gilmore Girls, secretly reading newspapers and magazines to satisfy her interest in journalism and entertainment.
While putting herself through college and working at Latin nightclubs and bars, Katy discovered photography. That creative interest eventually led to a public relations internship and opportunities with Latin Trends and Sofrito For Your Soul.
Those experiences showed her that photography, journalism, media, and public relations did not have to exist separately.
Another important moment occurred at an independent hip-hop show where a promoter reportedly locked the doors to keep the venue full. Katy met someone there who encouraged her to pursue entertainment and wrestling media, helping catalyze the launch of her first radio show.
The platform developed organically from those personal interests before evolving into a larger media business.
What Makes Rawrrzone Media Different?
Rawrrzone operates in an online environment crowded with podcasts, blogs, reaction channels, interview shows, and entertainment pages. Katy believes the platform stands apart because it does not build its identity around chasing whatever happens to be trending.
During her time at DTF Radio and WVMR, she avoided treating every interview the same. Questions and topics were developed around each guest’s individual story, artistic identity, and brand.
That approach helped Rawrrzone become more than a temporary promotional stop.
“Past guests have described Rawrrzone as a home they can always return to,” Katy said. “We have followed many creators through different stages of their development, upholding a standard of professional excellence while remaining raw, unfiltered, and journalistically sound.”
The platform has covered guests from multiple areas of entertainment, including independent creatives and nationally recognized personalities. Katy’s past interviews and features include Akon, Redman, WWE’s R-Truth, Mickey Factz, Daphne Maxwell Reid, Real Andrews, Trillian, Aina Brei’Yon, Joselito D Puppet, Joe The Poet, DAVVN, and ALYXX.
She has watched artists such as Joe The Poet expand internationally, while independent alternative acts including DAVVN and ALYXX have continued building momentum within their respective scenes.
The growing archive reflects Rawrrzone’s willingness to cover talent during different stages of a career—not simply after mainstream recognition arrives.
The Akon Interview That Became a Full-Circle Moment
Of all the conversations Katy has conducted, her interview with Akon carried particular emotional significance.
She grew up listening to his music during high school, and one of his songs helped her through an emotional experience as a child. She had always hoped she would someday have the opportunity to explain that connection to him.
That opportunity finally arrived during an especially difficult period in her personal life.
“Last year my world crumbled as far as my personal life, and I really didn’t think I was going to keep Rawrrzone going,” she shared. “My dream was always to tell him about it because it showed me that music heals, even in the weirdest of ways.”
The conversation represented more than access to a famous artist. It demonstrated the emotional power of music and why giving people space to discuss their stories remains central to Rawrrzone’s purpose.
Running an Independent Media Company Behind the Scenes
Independent media may appear glamorous from the outside, but Katy’s daily experience looks much different.
For much of Rawrrzone’s history, she maintained a traditional job while operating the platform. Her mornings included scheduling posts and reviewing news before work. Lunch breaks were used to check website analytics, evaluate content performance, prepare interview materials, and organize broadcasts. Evenings were spent managing social media and developing editorial calendars.
The workload reveals one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding independent media ownership.
People may see a finished interview or feature without realizing how many separate responsibilities produced it. Researching guests, booking talent, preparing questions, creating promotional graphics, editing content, maintaining a website, managing social media, finding sponsors, and building partnerships can all fall on one person or a very small team.
“Running an independent platform requires wearing many hats. Journalist, marketer, producer, photographer, editor, event promoter, and business owner, all at the same time,” Katy said.
She also cautions against evaluating a media platform exclusively through followers and views. Audience metrics matter, but Rawrrzone’s impact is also measured through relationships, opportunities, returning guests, community involvement, and the stories it helps preserve.
Competing Against Algorithms and Corporate Media
Algorithm changes have made it increasingly difficult for independent platforms to predict how audiences will find their work.
Since the pandemic, Katy has observed a decline in the attention given to long-form videos. Rawrrzone has adapted by producing shorter promotional videos and publishing multiple supporting posts that direct viewers toward its website and YouTube content.
Social media has played an important role in that growth. Rawrrzone’s on-location coverage of the Free the Green Video Game Tournament—powered by the United Empowerment Party founded by Redman and his sister, Sephida Artis-Mills—generated significant traction. Coverage of an R-Truth listening event also helped the platform reconnect with wrestling fans and attract hundreds of likes.
Still, Katy recognizes that independent outlets are competing against corporations with dedicated departments for content production, advertising, search optimization, marketing, and audience development.
“The challenge isn’t necessarily creating quality content, it’s getting people to discover it,” she explained.
Independent platforms must compensate by building organic communities, engaging directly with audiences, repurposing content, and maintaining consistency with fewer resources.
Rawrrzone’s advantage, according to Katy, is its authenticity.
“Large media outlets can cover a story, but independent platforms often build real relationships with their guests, communities, and audiences,” she said. “The algorithms may change, but building authentic relationships and delivering value to your audience is something no algorithm can replace.”
Relationships Over Transactions
Rawrrzone’s community-first approach was influenced by lessons Katy learned from her family.
Her grandfather sold hot dogs at the World Trade Center and treated every customer with equal respect. Her mother managed Giorgio’s Hair Salons and created lasting relationships with everyday customers and celebrity clients. Her late uncle carried a similar philosophy throughout Astoria, working with residents, taxi drivers, event organizers, and local businesses while finding ways to give back.
Those examples shaped Katy’s approach to artists, creators, companies, and potential partners.
“The key is to recognize people’s value beyond what they can do for you,” she explained. “The goal isn’t just to book an interview or secure a partnership. It’s to build long-term relationships where everyone feels valued and invested in each other’s success.”
That philosophy is one reason previous guests have described Rawrrzone as a family-oriented platform. The conversations may remain honest and unscripted, but guests are treated professionally and their stories are followed as their careers progress.
Community Over Clout
Katy sees both promise and danger in the current short-form media economy. TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts have created powerful discovery tools for independent artists, podcasts, and media outlets. At the same time, the industry’s obsession with algorithms and virality can create a misleading definition of success.
Millions of views do not automatically translate into streams, ticket sales, merchandise purchases, community participation, or sustainable careers. Meanwhile, creators with smaller but highly engaged audiences may generate meaningful support every time they release something.
“Social media has created a culture where people sometimes confuse visibility with influence,” Katy said. “Going viral can be great, but virality is temporary. Building relationships, trust, and a loyal audience is what creates longevity.”
She also believes the pressure to constantly publish can damage content quality. Not every post needs to follow a trending sound, challenge, or controversy. Some stories require time, research, and thoughtful conversation.
“At Rawrrzone Media, we’ve always focused on community over clout,” she added. “The goal isn’t just to get views. It’s to create opportunities, amplify voices, and build relationships that have value long after the algorithm moves on.”
Establishing Boundaries in a Sensational Media Environment
Authenticity does not mean operating without editorial standards. Rawrrzone refuses to pursue stories built around sensationalism, racism disguised as engagement bait, or ideas that violate fundamental human rights. Katy wants the platform to remain raw and honest without exploiting people or exaggerating situations for clicks.
She has also learned difficult lessons about trust while building the business. Some people appeared supportive when the platform was performing well but were unwilling to match her dedication during challenging periods.
“A major realization has been that genuine support is rare,” she said. “While many will join in when things look successful, few will match your level of dedication because it is your own vision.”
The process cost her money and relationships with people she once considered friends. Those experiences reinforced the importance of protecting the platform’s mission and carefully choosing who becomes part of its future.
The Future of Rawrrzone Media
Katy’s long-term goal is to develop Rawrrzone into a self-sustaining media platform supported by a larger collaborative team. She wants to secure sponsorships that allow Rawrrzone to compensate writers and journalists fairly, increase its editorial output, produce additional original podcasts, and expand its multimedia capabilities.
The vision is ambitious, but it remains rooted in the same purpose that inspired NYC Untold and Welcome to the Rawrrzone: giving independent voices a legitimate place to be heard.
Katy also wants her story to resonate with people who have felt like outsiders or were told there was no room for them.
“If a girl from Queens—someone who never quite fit in and was statistically unlikely to reach this point—can succeed, then you can as well,” she said.
After nearly a decade of interviews, setbacks, community-building, and creative persistence, Rawrrzone Media continues working toward a media environment where independent artists, business owners, and storytellers do not have to wait for mainstream approval before their work is treated as valuable.
That is the message Katy hopes people immediately understand about the brand: Rawrrzone is a home for independent voices still finding their path, and a platform determined to make sure those voices are not overlooked.
