A longstanding name in Spokane hip-hop, Pest The Menace gears up for mental warfare in his new project “This Is My EP Part Two.” Hitting a wide range of topics from smoking weed to heavier subject matters such as homelessness and other persistent challenges, Pest serves up an array of style and flows as he shows off his lyrical prowess. He draws from his own vitriol and emotion to fuel his words throughout the tape.
Starting things off hot, Pest The Menace opens his EP going right after Mayor of Spokane Nadine Woodward. Criticizing her for her policies on homelessness, as well as rewarding the police department with Tesla’s, Pest expresses frustrations with what he see’s as a socially inept police department and a Mayor ignoring the bigger picture. His aggressive lyricism over a boom-bap type beat reminds the listener of old school West Side cuts, where the focus was on what you say – not just how cool you say it.
Becoming Comfortable With The Uncomfortable
The EP in its entirety isn’t all political, and while Pest The Menace is passionate about helping others, he also presents his own issues. “This Is My EP Part Two” touches on the struggles of a broken home. In his track “Pine Boxes,” Pest channels some similar energy to old school Eminem; rapping about his own paranoia and how it lead to problems between him and his girl.
While he is rapping about his own experiences, reliving old feelings and memories isn’t always easy. This is something Pest is very open about, commenting on the uneasiness he had writing some of the songs.
This project has been an emotional rollercoaster. Tapping into the inspiration for the subject content took a lot, and caused considerable amount of discomfort for me.
