In its most magical moments, music will hit you so deep that you become overwhelmed with emotion. Sometimes you seek these songs out to cope with traumatic experiences and sometimes traumatic experiences are the catalyst to the most moving of pieces. In the face of COVID, the worst global crisis in the past century, P. Kruise and Campana have managed to strike my emotions like lightning.
I was casually scrolling through my Twitter feed when a tweet about “Real Gold” (World’s Gonna End) popped up. As I watched the teaser clip for the music video, my eyes started welling up and my arms started tingling. I went to Bandcamp and pressed play on the full track, this is when the sobbing started.
“And I know
I should be saving up my cash
And woah
And I know
I should be learning from the past
But the world is gonna end, so fuck it
I’ma spend it.”
P. Kruise pulls at those tender heartstrings while his voice hits emotional notes in the first few lines of the song. He captures the “fuck it” mentality our generation has adopted. It’s not that we don’t care or that we’re not trying to make a change, I think the song is more so from the perspective of the unheard voices tired of navigating a world full of never-ending hurdles. I cried even harder when Campana came in and started talking about some of the same exact thoughts that I have had on my mind lately.
Teaser For P. Kruise “Real Gold” (World’s Gonna End) Ft. Campana
“Say the world gon end,
Kinda how it seems in the moment.
Many people disappear without a notice
Like damn, that’s crazy,
See me rollin up the potent
Blow it all, while it’s time to lay low
Now another day goes of the quarantine
I ain’t speak to anybody in some years, it seems
Become accustom to the social distancing.”
Right now there is so much uncertainty in our future that it’s hard to not think that the world is going to end soon. So many social issues that have remained dormant have now been brought to the forefront as major factors and threats to our daily lives. We are at a turning point across the globe where some very serious decisions will need to be made. A blunt, or two, a day makes that much easier to cope with.
I don’t think anybody truly suspected that we’d have to spend our days in isolation away from even our most beloved family members. The path that we are taking the Earth down, total isolation seems more and more plausible, every day. All of these worries and fears spiraled through my head while listening to this song. This is the degree of emotional response I hope for when listening to music. Together, P. Kruise and Campana made this song a magical moment in music.
“See the planet going under, will you do you part?
Before you leave this Earth will you make your mark?”
