The notorious Outside Lands festival was back after a year away due to COVID-19. The festival took place over Halloween weekend at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, which was a little unusual for the festival that usually takes place in early August. The festival was filled with people of all ages, decked-out Halloween costumes, and good music and energy.
There were different stages along with the SOMA Tent, which was a new addition to the festival and had DJs performing all day and night. There was also a lot of great food and drinks to enjoy at the festival. This included Winelands, which had different Napa and Sonoma County wine selections for those who enjoy the history and selected tastes of local wines.
The lineup this year had acts such as Glass Animals, Rico Nasty, Tyler, the Creator, Kehlani, Tame Impala, J Balvin, TroyBoi, ZHU, The Strokes, and more. It was a festival you didn’t want to miss, with all of the great performers to be witnessed and experiences to be had. Here are some specifics about the sets, art, experiences, and more.

Music at Outside Lands 2021
Glass Animals
Glass Animals performed on Friday evening, playing some of their most classic songs such as “Heat Waves,” “Tokyo Drifting,” “Gooey,” “Your Love,” and more. The trio attracted a large audience, playing popular songs along with incredible visuals and lights. The sound echoed through Golden Gate Park, and the lights put on a performance of their own. The performance had a perfect blend of instruments, vocals, and visuals. People were singing along to their greatest hits, and the energy was through the roof.

Tyler, The Creator
Tyler, The Creator was one of the most talked-about performances at the festival. He headlined on Friday and unlike his usual performances, he came with just himself, no band, no DJ, and no extras. Most of the songs he played were from his latest album CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST, which was released earlier this year.
Tyler played songs such as “CORSO,” “LEMONHEAD,” “LUMBERJACK,” “MASSA,” “EARFQUAKE,” and more from his new album. He also played some older classics like “See You Again” and “Yonkers.” He had a great mix of chill songs, along with his harder, more raunchy classics. He brought a great performance to San Francisco with his usual rambunctious energy and fan favorite hits.
Shiba San
Shiba San played on Saturday evening, and the audience was roaring with energy. Young Thug had canceled at the last minute at the same time San played, so there were a ton of people at his set. He played classics such as “OKAY,” “Let’s Go Dancing,” “All I Need,” and more. People were bouncing to the beat, singing along, and having the time of their lives. Balloons and other floating objects were being thrown amongst the crowd, and the lights and atmosphere of the set trickled through the park. In my opinion, this was one of the most energetic and exciting crowds of the whole festival.
ZHU
ZHU headlined on Saturday and put on an amazing performance. He played classics such as “Lost It,” “Risky Business,” “Working For It,” “Hometown Girl,” and “Cocaine Model.” He also brought out 24kGoldn who had just played a set before him. They sang “I Admit It,” which got everybody hyped and dancing along.
ZHU mixed a lot of his own hits with some classics that everybody knew to get people excited and singing along. ZHU belted most of his songs, and with the lights and band, reminded me of The Weeknd, giving it his all and bringing the energy everybody needed.

TroyBoi
TroyBoi played on Sunday in the early evening and brought his usual energy and unique sound to the festival. He played some of his classics such as “B.I.A.,” “What You Know,” “ili,” “Do You,” and “MyBoi.” It was evident that he had a lot of fun with his DJ set, and the crowd was dancing, singing along, head-banging, and enjoying themselves. He had his usual trippy visuals which went along nicely with the vibrant lights. One of his last songs was the Squid Game song with his own drop, and it got everybody hyped.

Tame Impala
Tame Impala was one of the headliners on Sunday, closing out the 3-day festival. The crowd was massive, stretching out with thousands of people waiting to see the legendary band. Tame played “Borderline,” “Breathe Deeper,” “Nangs,” “Let It Happen,” “The Less I Know the Better,” “New Person, Same Old Mistakes,” and more. All of which got everybody in the crowd singing along.
They had lasers that shot into the back of the crowd, with cool multi-colored lights. The trippy visuals and the band’s greatest hits captured their psychedelic ambiance and left the crowd pleasantly satisfied with their performance.
Art & Experiences
The festival was filled with art installations and opportunities to be creative and show off your talents. On the walk from two of the main stages, there was a village that had vibrant mushroom decorations surrounding different vendors selling art, merchandise, food, jewelry, and more. There was also Winelands, which had local Napa Valley selections of wines, which people could enjoy throughout the festival.
There were a few different murals where people could paint and show off their creativity. Additionally, there was a lot of art pieces and decorations that captured the spooky Halloween aesthetic, along with the creative and joyful Bay Area artwork feel. The whole festival had an “in the woods” feel to it, and the artwork matched that perfectly.
