Metro Boomin is an American record producer and songwriter who became known through producing the hit song “Tuesday” for ILoveMakonnen. The song earned him a Grammy nomination and put him on the map to work with huge names like Drake, Future, Migos, 21 Savage, and Post Malone. He recently dropped a critically acclaimed album in December, HEROES & VILLAINS, featuring some of the big names from his past, including Travis Scott, 21 Savage, Future, Young Thug, and Gunna.
The HEROES & VILLAINS Album
The 15-track album was full of head-bangers and slow vibes that flowed together seamlessly. For instance, the compelling and slow-beat intro song “On Time,” featuring John Legend, segues perfectly into the next song, the hype “Superhero” track. Additionally, Morgan Freeman gives a powerful monologue about heroes that narrates the transition between “Around Me” and “Metro Spider.” The transition from song to song includes a monologue that readies you for the next song, much like Kendrick Lamar’s transitions in DAMN.
The most popular song on the album currently is “Creepin’,” featuring The Weeknd and 21 Savage. The lyrics paint the story of suspecting a cheating partner and asking them to keep it to themselves or out of view. It hits hard as many people go through this ordeal: loving someone who is disloyal and the heartbreak of knowing they may not be the one after all.
The least popular songs on the album are “Lock on Me,” “Feel the Fiyaaaah,” and “All the Money” with millions of plays less than the rest of the album’s songs. It may be that the last song isn’t getting much love because of the RICO case involving Gunna, or that people lost interest in the album towards the end; however, I think they were the best songs to close out the album.
Overall, HEROES & VILLAINS is a cohesive and well-crafted project and exemplifies Metro Boomin’s attention to detail. Metro experiments with different sounds and stays true to his style, while the album’s guest artists show off their talents. He is sure to remain a major player in the music industry for years to come. By watching the high-octane short film, reminiscent of a super-hero movie trailer, you can see metro’s self-contained universe.
