Diplo has just revealed in an interview with Complex that Major Lazer’s next album will be their last. The music group is made up of members Diplo, Jillionaire, Walshy Fire, Switch and Skerrit Bwoy. He cited his other side projects, like LSD and Silk City, as part of the reason for the split.
Their dancehall, reggae-inspired tracks have been at the top of dance charts for the past decade. Their single “Lean On” with MØ is certified four times platinum in the US and is one of the best-selling digital singles of all time with over 13 million copies sold. To say the breakup is devastating to dance music is an understatement.
In his interview with Complex, Diplo comments on the nature of today’s music industry as a whole:
“Music is so fast nowadays. It’s like we’re in a hip-hop cycle all the time; a new rapper comes out and careers last like two years these days. Everything is so rushed, so we’re just so lucky we can get things out on the radio these days.”
He goes on to say that Major Lazer’s last album will feature “a bunch of stuff you haven’t heard like that we made the last ten years”. What that means remains a mystery.
In the meantime, you can listen to Major Lazer’s Afrobeats mix, which was just dropped earlier this month. For the mix, Major Lazer teamed up with African artists like Mr. Eazi, Kizz Daniel, and more for a special mix to vibe to while they tour Africa this fall.
The album is scheduled to drop sometime in 2019, though the interview doesn’t specify when. We’ll keep you updated with any news on the last Major Lazer album before their split next year.
