Laney Workman, from Newcastle, Oklahoma owns Laney Nicole Photography, and is just starting out in music photography. Being only 19, her work is something to marvel at. Eric Steven Walker, a red dirt artist from Moore, says she is ‘simply wonderful.’ She works behind the scenes to capture his photo as well as catch him on video.
There are a wide variety of people behind the scenes in the music industry. Moreover, from band managers to promoters, artists and venues rely on them for help with their creative careers. Photographers like Workman have a very important role to fill. Workman isn’t just a photographer, though, she’s also working on her degree at Oklahoma City Community College for digital cinema.
Laney Workman and Her Talents

Many people have encouraged Workman to pursue photography. She recalls her uncle had bought her the camera she uses today. “Family that wants to see you grow and see you thrive is very important.” Furthermore, Workman’s friends provided support, helping her gain more experience, particularly through ‘senior sessions.’ These sessions are where high school seniors get professional photos taken before graduation.
“It’s been a fun and exciting journey.”

Workman met Walker after she drew a picture of him performing on stage. Walker loved this art so much he requested to use it for his album artwork. From this simple gesture, Walker employed her to take his photos and help him create a music video. It was Walker’s first music video and Workman recalls, “He didn’t put pressure on me.” She continues to create short videos for him to this day.
Workman Talks Tech
With a Canon EOSR at her side, Workman is able to capture amazing photos. “It’s better than a phone camera, you never want to go back.” The quality of a phone camera is getting better, but Workman prefers her professional camera. She says the editing process is much better, because with her Canon, she has more data to work with. Data are the levels in a photo, with the camera having more levels than a phone, which results in better quality.
“I am determined to get better.”

When taking photos of a live music event, the lighting on stage can be a challenge. “If the lighting is green, it doesn’t look good on skin.” Workman says she uses presets to avoid this as well as editing in Adobe LightRoom. Walker usually plays on a corner stage, giving Workman little challenges to capture shots.
Laney Workman Faces Challenges
While a setting can be challenging at times, capturing the photo is not as challenging to Workman. “Capturing still movement is harder.” Workman tells me that the shutter speed is very important for capturing photos. Low shutter speed helps with light, but fast shutter makes lighting darker. Having a high shutter speed gives the photographer a better ability to capture motion, but can be hard to use. With live music, it’s already dark in the setting.

“My main concern is safety.”

Many live music events in Oklahoma happen at local bars. Despite Workman being under age, she has to seek permission to be there, highlighting her determination to pursue her passion. “I just want to try everything and keep creating.” She is currently looking to book more bands and live music events, to help herself be the best at photography as she can be. Send a message to her instagram page to find out when she can book you, and she is open for commissions.
“Inspire others by being inspired.”
