Illenium has been on fire lately dropping track after track, and his collaboration with Call Me Karizma, “God Damnit,” proves that he is more versatile than we thought possible. Call Me Karizma, also called Karizma or Riz, is a young artist from Minnesota with an incredibly unique vocal style. This collaborative track between the two artists is nothing short of beautiful.
If you’re an Illenium fan expecting a song like “First Time,” this isn’t it. Going into this single, I had already heard from other EDM fans that they weren’t a fan of this track, because the style was too unlike Illenium. I tried to listen to “God Damnit” with an open mind, and I was pleasantly surprised by what I heard.
“God Damnit” is an emotionally-charged ballad about meeting your flaws head-on while being in love. Call Me Karizma manages to pack frustration, anger, tenderness and sadness into one short track. His rap on the track is similar to rappers G-Eazy and Logic in terms of vocal style. However, Karizma’s lyrical content is uniquely introspective, exhibiting a raw quality that’s hard to find anywhere else.
Though Illenium fans may not love this new song, it certainly shows his breadth of style. Illenium’s production is divine, perfectly mixing Karizma’s powerful voice with punchy instrumentals and a graceful, subtle backing melody.
Personally, I would love to see Illenium explore this area of music more. Call Me Karizma is nothing short of perfect on this collaboration, and it would be a shame for Illenium to not explore more collaborations similar to this one.
“God Damnit” is a must-listen for any fans of rap, electronic, or anything in between. It’s easily one of the most creative dance collaborations of the year. Give it a listen below and let us know what you think!
