How Music Artists can Utilize YouTube to Grow Their Fanbase

As a music artist, you must utilize different social media platforms to promote yourself and your music. There are countless platforms that allow you to post content and build a fanbase including the likes of Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter. If you’re strapped for time and energy, you should decide on 1-3 platforms to focus on, while also recycling content to others.

While your main platforms depend on where your target market is most- no matter who your target market is, as a music artist you should be using YouTube. YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine on the internet with over 3.5 billion searches per day. Take advantage of this traffic by posting consistent content on this platform. We post almost every day on our Youtube!

As a music artist there are countless forms of content you can create for YouTube. This is a way for you to show your face and personality to fans and strangers. This helps to create a connection between your music and strangers, and it helps deepen the connection between yourself and your fans. This generally makes them more loyal and more likely to support you.

This article will go over different types of content you can create on YouTube as a music artist. As well as ways to optimize your videos and profile to enable yourself to be found and grow.

Content Ideas for Music Artists on YouTube

Original Music

First and foremost, all of your original music should be uploaded to YouTube as audio over the still cover art. From there you can create other content surrounding each song including a visualizer, lyric video, and/or music video. If you have a low budget, don’t worry about the music videos yet. You should also post live sessions of you performing each song. This should preferably be done in a studio or at least with high-quality production done elsewhere.

Vlogs

Next, you should be posting vlog content. These videos show your personality and artist career the most. This is your best chance at building a connection. Make sure to record behind-the-scenes footage whenever you are working on your music or artist career. Feel free to add in vlog content not related to your music. This shows that you’re a real person just like the viewers.

How do you start a Vlog? Take out your phone, put it in selfie mode, hit record and start talking about who you are, what you’ve been up to, what’s coming next, what you’re doing right now, and where people can stream or find your content. Once you talk for 3-5 minutes, end the recording and upload it to Youtube. If you want more details on what to say for the title, description, tags, and other information, we can definitely help. Music Lessons

Use your musical talent and film music lessons based off of what you are most proficient in. Think instruments, vocals, production, or songwriting. Create a series so viewers can continue to come back and learn from you. Make a video about different topics of your expertise. Examples including how to write lyrics, how to sing low or high, how to produce certain types of beats, etc.

Covers

One of the most popular types of music-related YouTube videos are covers. Take advantage of people searching for popular songs by creating covers of them. When users are searching for that song, your cover may come up in the search or it may be recommended to them. Think of songs that are trending but aren’t too popular. You want to avoid doing a cover on a song that too many people have already covered. Use this content to show your taste in music and inspirations, plus maybe you can get the attention of the artist you’re covering.

Performance Sets

If you’re a DJ or performing artist, consider uploading sets from live performances, live streams, or perform sets specifically for YouTube. Use your original music within these sets. Make sure to put song IDs and time stamps in the caption to inform viewers and help with SEO. Good or improving SEO will help your songs and music get found on search engines.

Interviews

Consider interviewing other artists for your channel. This gives both of you exposure and another place to showcase your personality and knowledge. You can even interview industry professionals to learn valuable knowledge, share it with others, and create a connection!

Do Research!

Do your own research. Find successful artists that are similar to you and see what kind of content they are creating. If their fanbase enjoys their content, chances are that a similar target market will also enjoy this type of content. Stay up-to-date with what is trending and hop on relevant trends when you can.

All of these videos can be recycled to other platforms by cutting out highlight clips. You can use live stream content from other platforms and upload it to YouTube as well.

Optimize your Videos and Profile

Now that you have enough ideas to create consistent content, you must optimize your videos and profile to enable yourself to be found, viewed, and subscribed to. This includes posting consistently at least 1-3 videos per week. Optimize your profile by adding a profile and header image, biography, links to socials, playlists, and elements of your personal brand. Optimize each video by creating an SEO description, utilizing tags and hashtags, end cards, and advanced settings.

This article goes over how to optimize your YouTube video descriptions as a music artist. I will be going over some points from that article, but I suggest you read the full article as well.
