RMR is back with another round of Hot Music Friday! This week, we will look at some of the tracks topping the charts. Whether they are hits from the past few years or the last few months, these are some tracks you should be jamming to this weekend.
All I Want For Christmas is You- Mariah Carey
Over the last decade, Mariah Carey’s Christmas hit became an internet meme that signaled the holidays were on their way. It comes as no surprise that this song would be topping the charts the week of Thanksgiving. Whether you look forward to this time of year or not, there’s no denying this song is a staple of the Christmas season.
Vampire- Olivia Rodrigo
Consistently topping the charts, “Vampire” is just one of the many Olivia Rodrigo songs ranking at the top. The tragic yet beautiful broken heart ballad can strike a chord with anyone. No matter your age or gender, this track will bring you right back to that first heartbreak.
Fast Car- Luke Combs
When an artist makes a song that sticks with so many, it’s hard for another artist to capture it. This isn’t the issue with Luke Combs’s cover of Tracey Chapman’s “Fast Car.” While many have covered the song in the past, Combs perfectly encapsulates the heartbreak and hope Chapman’s 1988 hit captured.
Lil Boo Thang- Paul Rusell
Definitely a track to put on when you need a little pick-me-up. “Lil Boo Thang” is a fun dancing around-your-apartment type of track. Paul Rusell’s voice is vibrant with a comforting feel to it; in a world that can often feel overwhelming, Paul Russell’s music is like a musical hug, wrapping the listener in a warm embrace and reminding them that, even in challenging times, there is beauty and joy to be found.
Use To Be Young- Miley Cyrus
Being an inspiration for many since her days on the Disney Channel, Miley Cyrus’s song about growing up and changing is a reminder to herself and her fans from day one that it’s ok to grow up and make mistakes. “Use to be Young” is a goodbye song to your youth, and while it might be hard to leave behind those days, it doesn’t mean the memories will be left behind as well.
Cobra- Megan Thee Stallion
Mixing Rap and Rock, Megan Thee Stallion’s “Cobra” is one of her most influential songs. Even though the song is upbeat, the lyrics are personal and give a peak into what Megan Thee Stallion has been going through internally. The metaphor of the Cobra shedding its skin and becoming new is perfect for this new era of Megan Thee Stallion’s music.
Last Christmas- Wham!
While most Christmas songs want to have a cheerful attitude about them, Wham took a different approach, pairing happy bells and an upbeat melody with lyrics about the heartbreaks of Christmas past. Even though it debuted in 1984, “Last Christmas” still finds its way onto the charts during the happy yet at-times downing holiday season.
Eyes Wide Shut ( Feat. Avril Lavigne & Travis Barker)- Illenium
Mixing Avril Lavigne’s pop-punk vocals with Travis Barker’s guitar playing and Illenium DJ skills, they have created a track reminiscence of pop-punk songs of the past. While it differs from Illenium’s usual music, it is nice to see artist break the mold of their norms and try something new. “Eyes Wide Shut” is evidence that taking those risks is beneficial.
