Disclaimer: The following are my personal views and in no way do I speak for RMR through this article. Also, don’t continue reading if you get easily offended by outspoken women.
With most industries being male dominated, the music photography field is no different. Being a part of such a patriarchal field is very difficult and tiring. Although I haven’t been in the scene as long as some of the other women out there, I’ve already had enough to rant about. The following stems from my own personal experiences as a female music photographer, as well as other women.
- Being looked down upon
- Having older male photographers patronize you (we clearly need your assistance and opinion, thank you)
- Having older male photographers block your shot knowingly
- Getting hit on mid-show while you’re shooting
- Having security scrutinize your pass extra hard
- Getting asked who you’re “here for” or “here because of” (because female photographers are only there in exchange for favors of course!)
- Having groupies stare you down backstage and/or in the pit
- Getting hit on by the artist (sorry, missed the memo that being a girl backstage equivalates to being a groupie)
- Not getting tour opportunities because it’s an “all male crew” and having a girl along would be a hassle
I love the music industry and in no way does this article stem out of hatred. With everything comes the good and bad side of things, and this is a part of the industry that I think can be improved and changed. I hope that this article will be eye opening for some of you.
