With the release of Deadpool 2 over the weekend, the soundtrack to the film features a new song by Diplo, French Montana, and Lil Pump titled “Welcome To The Party” – an energetic single that also features Zhavia Ward. While Diplo is mainly an EDM producer, he surprises with a track that is a perfect mix of his roots in EDM and the hip-hop elements that support French Montana and Lil Pump’s contribution to the song.
While French Montana delivers a well-executed verse that is short but catchy, the real surprise on the track is the verse from Lil Pump. While Lil Pump has been labeled before as a “Soundcloud rapper” or “mumble rapper,” he has an impressive, confident delivery on this track. With lyrics such as “I can’t feel my body, ’cause I pop a lot of molly” and “Drop 5 million on my crib, now Lil Pump rich as shit”, Lil Pump’s lyrics are comfortably within his regular money and drug references that have become part of his “party” image. With that said, he delivers an impressive, catchy verse that sets a high bar above some of his previous work.
On the production side, Diplo’s work on the track is exactly what would be expected. The fast-paced track features looping, synthesized horns that are a staple of Diplo’s sound across his catalog of music. Accompanying the looping horns is a hard snare, and intricate hi-hat work spliced throughout. To round out the sound, Diplo adds deep kicks heard on the lower end of the track, punching through the various layers of the mix to give the track a catchy, party anthem vibe.
