Cardi B says she’s going to sound like your favorite rapper next.
Hip-hop is ever evolving and that is one of it’s greatest traits. But there are some places you’d rather not see it head towards. One of those places is a loss of originality. At Cardi B’s recent show, she took the time to address some of her critics of that very subject. This included stating she “Doesn’t give a fuck,” if she stole Kodak’s flow from “No Flockin”
“I’ma sound like all your favorite rappers. I’ma take all they flows, and I’ma body it bitch! One day I’ma sound like Kodak, the next day I’ma sound like Meek Mill, the next day I’ma sound like Migos, I don’t give a fuck!”
I said this in my last post that I thought the music she just previewed on Instagram Live sounded very Meek Mill-esque as she transitioned from that low to high energy, just like he did for the Dreams & Nightmares intro.
With how diverse hip-hop culture is, it would be naive to think that artists are not out here watching to see what’s hot and emulating it to catch and be apart of that certain wave. But artists usually walk that line carefully enough to show they’ve additionally brought something to the table.
Usually, when accusers are right about the actions of who they are accusing, the accused more times than not, will still deny that action. It’s like when spouses catch each other for cheating. They know they’re caught, but something in them still feels the need to deny so their integrity isn’t completely lost.
Cardi is the first hip-hop artist I’ve ever heard be so open to state that she’ll take flows and will continue to take flows. With how open she is about how much she borrows from others, there may be some validity to Azealia Banks statements that Cardi has raps written for her.
Once again, I know co-writers exist in hip-hop, but artists are usually never boastful about these affiliations.
What do you think of Cardi saying she’ll keep taking flows from other rappers? Does it bother you? Does it matter? Do you think this will affect how people view Cardi as an artist? Or is this just the landscape that hip-hop is headed towards?
Maybe her boyfriend, Offset, will chime in since he is always calling out other rappers for stealing the Migos’ flow.
