Buying weed in Maine is now easier than ever.
Cannabis legalization is blowing up in New England – and the state of Maine is no exception. October of 2020 was the first big roll-out for adult-use weed stores. Since then, hundreds of dispensaries have opened across the state.
Maine offers both adult-use cannabis to users over the age of 21 and medical cannabis to patients who qualify. There are key differences in each market.

Maine Adult-Use Cannabis
With tourism booming post-Covid, visitors and local cannabis enthusiasts alike are eager to discover Maine’s cannabis scene. Maine voters approved Question 1 in November of 2016, making it the ninth state to legalize recreational use.
Cannabis was decriminalized in Maine back in 2009, making possession of up to 2.5 ounces a civil infraction. This new legislation is what makes it possible for adult-use retail locations to open and operate.
The legislation was delayed due to a number of factors, but by October 2020 the first adult-use stores opened for business.
To visit an adult-use weed store in Maine, you simply need a valid ID showing that you are over 21. You will experience higher prices than medical, as well as a 15% tax added to your final purchase.
Some adult-use stores in Southern Maine are Fire on Fore, Sweet Dirt, and Seaweed & Co.
Medicinal Cannabis in Maine
The idea of medical cannabis was introduced in Maine in 1999 and has gone through a ton of changes to get to where it is today. Getting a medical card in Maine is typically easy, with some qualifying conditions being insomnia, anxiety, or chronic pain.

Typically, it’s more convenient to get a medical certification from a practitioner rather than your primary care provider. There are a few practitioners that do certifications via telephone, which is the most convenient way to access medicinal cannabis. Essentially, once making an appointment, your practitioner will reach out and have you answer several questions to determine if you qualify.
A group called Medical Marijuana Practitioners make it extremely convenient to get certified. They have a “green ambulance” that does group certifications at special events and on-site at some dispensaries.
Pricing for certification ranges per practitioner, but the average price is around $50 per certification. Maine medical marijuana cards are good for one year before you must renew. Further, medicinal cannabis is taxed at 5.5% in Maine.
Some medical weed stores in Southern Maine are Grass Monkey, Atlantic Farms, and Elevate Maine.
