Best DJs in Spokane Ft. Akoma (Spotlight + Mix)

We bring to you yet another of Spokane’s finest local artists. At first glance, you may see her as only a cute anime-inspired angel, with brightly colored hair, hilarious memes, and funny selfies. But once you dig deeper, you’ll quickly see that she’s more than that. I am referring to none other than the infamous Akoma, and this girl ain’t nobody to fuck with.

Fresh out the cut and into the club, Makaela Lyndsey, AKA Akoma, is fast becoming notorious for murdering crowds with her ear-splittingly heavy bass tracks. Dubstep, Trap, and other dark bass sub-genres are her forte, but much of what she now works with is Riddim. Of course, Akoma only touches the grimiest, most eerie, and indecently filthy tracks she can find. In the short time that she’s been in the industry, Akoma has opened for Dubloadz, NGHTMRE, Xaebor, Ponicz, Dr. Ozi, Helicopter Showdown, Mantis, and other amazing artists.

Today we have the honor of presenting Akoma as a special guest artist for our second edition of In The Cuts, a new DJ segment hosted by RMR and Dee Jay Soup. Her mix features tracks from Svdden Death, Excision, Virtual Riot, MurDa, Akronym, 5OHMAN, Funtcase, Yakz, Badklaat, Ivory, Chibs, Answerd, Infekt and so many more.

RMR Interviews Akoma

RMR: Tell me a little about yourself and your history with music. How would you describe your taste and style? Do you have any personal traits or beliefs that define your music and you as an artist?

Akoma: I’ve been obsessed with bass-y sounds as long as I can remember. I listened to lots of Metal when I first started finding music that defined me growing up. I loved the heavy breakdowns and intensity. I guess I feel that intensity in myself. I discovered Dubstep around 2011 and have been a die-hard fan ever since. Now, I try to play around with any type of bass-centric music that I can.

RMR: What do you have to say about the electronic scene here in Washington?

Akoma: I’ve immersed myself in a scene where the love for music is the #1 priority at shows and the DJs truly care about the art of mixing. Seattle’s underground dubstep scene is definitely where it’s at! I have made some of the strongest friendships there. I remember being at Foundation Nightclub during Badklaat’s set with some of my Brinkage Crew friends and I said to a friend, “I wish I could be up there on that stage laying down those tracks! This is so badass!” And my homie just looks at me and goes “Why don’t you?” I was dumbfounded. And literally, from that day on I dedicated everything to becoming a serious DJ and music producer.

RMR: What musical projects are you currently working on?

I’ve got a handful of tracks I’m working on right now. I really want to make sure they sound exactly how I want them to. I’m nitpicky. I want to portray myself purely and flawlessly as Akoma.  Keep an eye out, I hope to release some real fire in 2018.
