The Benny The Butcher headline show at San Diego’s House of Blues is on May 11th. The New York native kicked off his 18-show “Everybody Can’t Go” tour in April. With special guest Bold James you can expect the two to light up the crowd with their catchy rhymes and aggressive rapping skills.
Benny is set out to grasp the audience’s attention with his classic hip-hop style of music. With his gritty beats, hardcore lyrics, and nostalgic sound, he can turn up the audience effortlessly. Jeremie Pennick, known as Benny, at 36, has amassed a devoted following alongside his cousins Westside Gunn and Conway the Machine in the past five years. As the core of the Griselda Records collective, they’ve emerged as premier street artists in New York hip-hop, garnering support from co-signed by the likes of Jay-Z, Eminem, Nas, Pusha T, Raekwon, Drake and more for their gritty, nostalgic rap style.
Mentorship has significantly influenced Benny’s career trajectory. Despite the inherent competitiveness within hip-hop culture, rooted in his own experiences within the cypher scene, Benny emphasizes the importance of honoring and learning from his predecessors. He acknowledges the ongoing presence of mentorship in the rap scene, noting that it often goes unnoticed. For him, mentorship involves industry veterans creating opportunities and paving the way for younger artists, rather than simply issuing directives or lectures.
Having released ‘Everybody Can’t Go’ under Def Jam, Benny the Butcher could easily portray himself as a self-made, independent artist who has emerged from his underdog status. However, that’s not his intention. Throughout the discussion, he emphasizes the importance of collaboration and teamwork in his journey. From the initial support of Westside Gunn and Conway the Machine at Griselda to the contributions of his team, comprising managers, producers, and other creative minds, in realizing his artistic vision, Benny acknowledges that his success is not solely his own. He recognizes that Benny the Butcher represents a collective effort, stating, “Benny the Butcher is all of us. I’m just the public face.”
