While J. Cole has made the Dreamville label widely successful, Bas has been a solid up and coming artist on the roster. After a bit of a break, he’s back with a new single titled “Tribe” featuring J. Cole. In addition, his upcoming project titled Milky Way will be dropping tonight.
The new single is possibly his best yet, as he showcases his rapid and thrillingly accurate flows paired with deep meaningful lyrics. While many topics are touched upon from start to finish, Bas mainly discusses how he’s happy with his current life. Lyrics such as “I think I made it, I think I made it / ‘Cause I’m always smiling / And you are the reason now Girl / I can’t explain it” accurately display these thoughts.
One of the most interesting aspects of “Tribe” is the unfamiliar beat patterns displayed from start to finish. Produced by J. Cole and Childish Major, the instrumental is highly acoustically driven as it has a prominent guitar lead. The guitar incorporates a rhythmical pattern that is commonly heard in bossa nova music, which includes many syncopated and off-beat rhythms.
The video for the new single fits the overall feel and array of themes perfectly. The entire video for “Tribe” takes place in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood, as there are bright colors seen everywhere. The luminous visual qualities further amplify the feel of both the lyrics and the instrumental throughout the entire song.
