This coming Wednesday, July 24th, a new annually traveling festival will be dropping down at WAMU Theater like an atomic bomb. $uicideboy$, Shoreline Mafia, Trash Talk, Night Lovell, Denzel Curry, Pouya, Germ, City Morgue, and Turnstile will be throwing down for the “Grey Day” tour. This new festival is meant to bring together the new intersections of hip-hop, trap, hardcore, and punk.
Today’s popular music is brimming with grey areas on its true classification. Not to mention the subcultures of angsty youth supporting these groups. You have a lot of hip-hop artists delving into the world of heavier, distorted, and more punk-fueled content. The result is a unique sound that rivals the anarchistic metal scene that was prominent 10 years ago. The energy some of these kids are putting out without even having a band behind them is nearly impossible to look away from.
$uicideboy$ and Night Lovell’s manager, Dana Biondi, made several comments about the future of the Grey Day tour. They envision the festival growing exponentially each year, bringing on a new clash of cultures each time. Whether it’s building skateparks outside venues or bringing in obscure talent such as industrial goth artists to perform—they intend to break down the barriers. They want to create a space without boundaries that highlights, and celebrates today’s “grey area culture.”
Nearly every name on this bill has immense weight in the current underground and even the mainstream hip-hop world. You’d be crazy to miss out on this jam-packed evening of cantankerous youths spitting pure heat.
