The NHL and city of Seattle have made it official and announced professional hockey’s return to the pacific northwest. Hockey and sports enthusiasts alike have been celebrating since the news broke and fans can’t stop speculating about what Seattle’s hockey team might look like come opening night.
There are plenty of top-notch submissions with northwestern themes that include whales, aquatic mammals, and sea creatures. The Seattle Greys and Seattle Kraken are my favorite submissions. However, the Seattle ownership group overseeing the Key Arena renovations applied for 38 domains for the 13 potential team names, ESPN reports.
Seattle Cougars, Eagles, Emeralds, Evergreens, Firebirds, Kraken, Rainiers Renegades, Sea Lions, Seals, Sockeyes, Totems, and Whales.
To be honest any of these names would be a great representation for our squad, but one name in particular stand out to me. Tell me the Seattle Sockeyes doesn’t have a nice ring to it? First, sockeye salmon are one of the toughest fish in the river for the annual arduous journey they take to their spawning ground. Second, hockey is the only non-combat sport that allows mutual combat. Why would you not name your team the sockeyes, when your team actually socks eyes during a hockey game?
Seattle’s new squad will benefit from the same expansion rules that helped Las Vegas’s Golden Knights propel themselves into the Stanley Cup finals last season. Key Arena will play host to the team’s expansion draft. Northgate will also welcome the team’s new state-of-the-art training facility.
The Northwest Welcomes Seattle’s Hockey Team With Open Arms
This hockey team has will not only rejuvenate the Key Arena, but an entire fan base that has been forgotten about for decades. Maybe this will be just momentum to bring make our ultimate dreams come true. Our dream of once again seeing our Super Sonics dawn the green and gold. This hockey team makes that dream seem that more realistic than ever before.
