Shawna Virago is a transgender music artist from San Francisco, celebrating Pride Month with“Tranimal,” her new single. Recently, a lot more LGBTQ+ artists are being recognized in the music industry. Because of artists like Kehlani, Hayley Kiyoko, Troye Sivan, and more, the queer community has developed a strong voice in the music scene. So in “Tranimal,” Shawna uses her powerful voice and clever wordplay to share her experiences in this rock single. Her music twists together folk and punk, offering raw observations about survival in a predatory world, queer love, and sticking up for the underdog.
Tranimal is a made up term by Virago that combines the words “transgender” and “animal” together. Virago sings about running away from all the people who are out to get her and all their negative perceptions of her. Despite the difficulties that she may face, she still strongly stands firm in her identity. As a result, Virago hopes to support other people who may have similar experiences. So this track encourages people who are struggling with their identity.
Virago describes the urgency behind this song: “This is the story of my generation – a generation of transgender people who came out long before the internet, before transgender celebrities and reality TV stars … before anybody gave a shit about us.” “This country needs this trans-anthem more than ever before,” she says, “They can’t keep us down — and what better time to fight back and declare our power than Pride Month?”
Happy Pride Month!
