Jerome Baker was a winner at the Northern California Cannabis Cup, put on by High Times. Jerome received the award for Best Glass with the creation of his Mellow Yellow bong. We thought it necessary to hammer this man’s existence into your heads more; he’s essentially a legend. We even had the opportunity to sit-in on his creation of the world’s largest bong back in April in our own great city of Seattle. You can read about that here.
Jerome Baker is one of the most famous names in glass culture. Period. Jason Harris started blowing glass in 1991 under the pseudonym Jerome Baker to pay homage to Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. From starting out in a cramped dorm room in Eugene, Oregon, to over 70 employees and a multi-building campus – Jerome has made some seriously big moves.
“Jerome Baker Designs” now boast over 25 satellite studios where their artists can work comfortably and let their creativity flow and flourish. Harris has been spearheading functional glass art and culture for 28 years. Unsurprisingly, he stepped in with his 6-foot-long bong, Mellow Yellow, and truly blew everyone at the NorCal Cannabis Cup out of the water.
Jerome noted during his “massive bong” series (where he made 24-foot bongs) that “blowing such massive forms is not easy, and it takes a lot of energy. In general, making glass is about finding the path of least resistance – especially at this size and scale. There’s a science to blowing glass. With massive bongs, we had to problem solve and go outside the normal way of doing things.” Read about the “massive bong” series here.
