Anyone that went to the Yung Lean & Sad Boys show at Neumos had an awesome evening. With tickets being just over $25, you couldn’t ask for much more. As stated in my last Yung Lean write up, the way I became aware of this event was from Facebook advertising. The event ad was online for over a month prior to the event. It was up for so long people were commenting that they “couldn’t wait for the event to pass just so they wouldn’t have to see the ad anymore.”
I felt bad for those judging the ad by the cover, while knowing they would miss a great show. I didn’t want to miss an opportunity to see an artist in a small venue. Catching artists in small venues before they blow up is a great experience, and fortunately, my curiosity lead me to Yung Lean’s albums and and his concert.
The day leading up to the concert was weird, it seemed the universe didn’t want me to go. Sometimes when so many things are going wrong, I get concerned that it’s the universe telling me to stay home. Nothing was going to stop me from seeing Yung Lean though!
Thaiboy Digital was the opening act for the evening and brought an energetic autotune approach with nice baselines. Neumos was starting to knock. Thaiboy had trouble entering the United States because he’s from Thailand, so they pushed the whole tour back. After jumping around and hyping up the crowd up it was Thaiboy’s time to leave the stage.
Yung Lean finally came out on stage and stood behind the mic stand. His red hair and his striped prison jumpsuit stood out under the lights. He started performing songs off albums Stranger, Frost God, Warlord and Unknown Memory. His performance clearly emphasized the fog machines. At one point, I couldn’t see anything but a body shape on stage and behind the thick fog were the lights flashing out of control. I thought to myself, “If I haven’t had a seizure yet someone in here is going to.”
Minutes later, the fire alarm starting ringing. Yung Lean confusingly continued to play until he was asked off stage. Shortly after, security told the crowd to exit through the doors. I was terribly disappointed at this moment. The uniqueness of an artist that Yung Lean is and the music he produced can’t be replicated. I can always see A$AP Ferg or A$AP that, but you don’t see too many Yung Lean’s out here.
As we sat outside in the rain we waited for the fire trucks to arrive. At this time it started to rain even more. 15 minutes went by and there finally started to be some movement within the building. The firefighters were leaving the building and returning to their trucks so it was a waiting game from here.
No one knew what was going to happen next, but we got the call that we could go back inside. I squeezed my way over to the stage and picked up where we left off. We waited about 10 minutes until it went dark and were finally blessed with Yung Lean once again. Prior to the fire alarm he had played for maybe 15 minutes and after we got back inside he played for another 40 minutes or so
It was a fantastic evening from that point on and Yung Lean seemed to be in shock. He was thrilled how committed we were to seeing him perform. After having to evacuate and wait out the firefighters in the rain to come back in and finish the evening with him. He told the crowd “we’re only 5 shows into the tour, but Seattle will definitely be one of my favorites.”
