Young Mo Da Great is a Ugandan (Kampala) born hip-hop artist who has resided in the Seattle area over the last 15 years. Coming to the U.S. as an immigrant, Mo Da Great has a unique story, one many haven’t heard in hip-hop before.
Already having a great passion for the culture. Mo Da Great decided to become an artist after he realized music’s capacity to transform not only his life, but those around him too. Using a thoughtful combination wordplay, heartfelt messages, and effortless swag, he stands out in a tumultuous sea of modern rappers.
Who Is Young Mo Da Great?
Growing up with the nickname Young Mo (Moses), his hip-hop moniker was basically waiting to be affirmed. When a friend jokingly said “we are going to call you Young Mo Da Great,” he ended up liking it and ran with the name from there. Getting his first taste of hip-hop life from these friends, he later joined their hip-hop group.
Describing his sound as “an introspective all-you-can-eat buffet,” Mo Da Great strives to have something for everyone. With the goal to surprise listeners on every track, you may hear various subjects/styles of hooks, and a plethora of musical diversity. His tracks “Freddy Krueger” and “Maximum” are good examples of this, with each track taking on it’s own unique feel. I personally enjoy “Freddy Krueger” for the fact its just a freestyle of the man himself spittin’. That’s not to disregard the confidence and sheer fire that is “Maximum,” though, an equally vivid piece.
His latest single “On God,” off his Introspective Volume 2 mixtape, is a reflection on fate vs free will. Believing that everything is destiny, that there are no coincidences in life, and that God controls destiny, this song ultimately details the life of Mo Da Great. “On God,” according to him, stands as the most powerful records he’s written.
I believe no one has talked about God like this since Kanye West did “Jesus Walks.”
