Yonny is a rapper hailing from Lynnwood, Washington, a small city outside of Seattle. His debut single “NAH,” produced by Evan George, dropped on August 19th, along with his debut EP Ghetto Sunset. The album is very cohesive from beginning to end throughout all seven tracks. It’s a quick one though, with a run time of 15 minutes. The whole theme of the EP, I discovered while listening, is to protect your energy while not letting anyone stop you from doing you. When you truly love something, you’re not going to let outside forces stop you from being great.
The first half of the single is hard-hitting, full of lyrical punchlines over a lo-fi guitar-centric beat. Moving into the second half, the song keeps that same energy but with even more aggression. The single is only a minute and 50 seconds but leaves a strong impression. After that, his next song on the EP, “HIDEAWAY,” continues to pique my curiosity, making me want to continue listening curiously for more.
The “NAH” music video was released on September 16 on the CITYWIDE YouTube channel. The video accompanies Yonny and his friends in various places around his hometown. Cut scenes show places such as the basketball court, the pawn shops, and him in the car with the homies, from day to nighttime. At the end of the video, he has an instrumental teaser for another track on his project called “PAID.” If you haven’t heard that song yet, you should definitely listen to it.
YONNY is a great artist, from his monotone voice to his delivery throughout the EP, it’s all great. There is substance within his music and it’s clear when listening to Ghetto Sunset. With the new single and debut EP, I definitely want to hear more from him. I wish him nothing but longevity and greatness in his future.
