Controversial Florida recording artist XXXTENTACION has just released his brand new project simply titled, ?.
The 18 track LP clocks in at under forty minutes with most of the songs being about two minutes long. If you follow X’s music you know he often keeps his tracks very short and to the point. His last album, 17, followed the same routine. That album was a splendid masterpiece that showed the many sides of someone battling his inner demons. This new album is of the same cloth.
Throughout the new release, he hits so many different styles. It’s hard to pinpoint him as one thing or the other. His last album relied mostly on acoustic guitars and XXX’s smooth melodies with moments of angst and fire flashing throughout. The new project isn’t lacking any of that but takes it a little bit further.
On tracks like, “ALONE, PART 3”, “SAD!” and “Hope” which is dedicated to the victims of the Parkland, Florida school shooting, X shows the emotional, solemn side we’ve come to recognize the young rapper for. However, he gives us more this time.
There are a few instances where he just full on rocks out and the end product was amazing. “Schizophrenia” and “Floor 555” are two examples of this and also two of the dopest cuts on the projects.
When I was looking at the track list I happened to also notice that Brooklyn rapper and incredible emcee Joey Bada$$ made the cut on a track called “infinity (888)”. I kind of scratched my head wondering what this would sound like and it totally blew my mind upon listening. Joey comes in killing the track like he’s known to do and XXXTENTACION comes right behind him keeping the momentum going. I honestly was expecting Joey to bury him on his own track, but that didn’t happen. Not only did he hold his own, but together they delivered one of the best songs on the album.
Regardless of what people may or may not think about X and some of the things he has allegedly done, there is no denying his talent and creativity. Not only does he speak on the issues going on in his life and the way he thinks and feels about things, but he does it in a style all his own.
One thing I do know about XXXTENTACION is you can’t put him inside of a box…and that’s what makes him so special.
