As you all have come to know, here at Joint Parenting we are all about sharing valuable information about cannabis. We love connecting with other moms and helping them navigate the world of marijuana. Although we wish to protect the two moms featured here today, we felt this particular blog would still be valuable for those who have been on the fence about weed and pregnancy. We are not doctors and we cannot advise or encourage you to use cannabis for health reasons. Both of the parents who create content for Joint Parenting have seen numerous benefits from using cannabis while pregnant.
Parent #1 – When I learned I was pregnant with my daughter I stopped smoking completely, but in hindsight, I wish I wouldn’t have. This was in 2013 shortly after it became legal and I was still pretty unfamiliar with its medicinal uses at that point.
The pregnancy was very stressful because I conceived with an IUD in place and it had to stay or we would have lost her. I still feel like if I could have lowered my stress levels by smoking while pregnant, she would be a different kiddo today.
Parent #2 – With my son during 2016-2017, I smoked a bit daily. Sometimes in the mornings to curb the debilitating morning sickness. I also had SPD, which is excruciating hip and pelvic pain, starting as early as 20 weeks so I’d smoke for that as well.
At this point, I’ve switched over to a vape system and use high CBD sativa dominant strains. I even smoked on the way to the birthing center with him because labor was pretty intense. I found out later I was 7-8cm during the car ride.
Both of my children went over 40 weeks, were a healthy weight, and hit milestones earlier than what the average is. I wasn’t really open with my cannabis use during my first pregnancy, but I was with my second. Not loudly advocating, but answered questions to those who asked.
I smoked very minimally during my first trimester. For pain and nausea, I tried tinctures and other CBD edibles like the ginger mints which helped. I always preferred the CBD cartridge as the results were felt the quickest and I could control the intake without going too far. My midwife knew and was on board because I don’t use pharmaceuticals or any kind.
While backlash is always a possibility, if I spoke matter of factly, I rarely saw any. Also with the vape technique, it’s not something that’s super obvious. I wasn’t doing it to get “high”, so no one could tell one way or another. It helped me tremendously with the physical aspects of pregnancy as well as mentally so my hormones wouldn’t get the best of me in everyday situations.
I truly believe that adrenal responses during pregnancy and infancy affect children, even on a subconscious level, so the calmer I am, the better it is for everyone.
Special thanks to our moms for sharing such personal experiences.
