The State Of Underground Hip-Hop: Upcoming California Rappers

If you listen to hip-hop, I shouldn’t have to explain the importance of California to the rap game. It shouldn’t be surprising at all that there are literally thousands of upcoming California rappers. There are roughly 40 different artists mentioned somewhere in this article, I guarantee you’ll find something to tickle your eardrums.

Now, if you really don’t know how important California was to hip-hop, I highly suggest you binge-watch all of Hip-Hop Evolution on Netflix for starters. In season one, episode four goes over the start of the gangster rap revolution in South Central, Los Angeles. The second episode of the second season is centered around the hyphy movement that came out of the Bay Area.

Absolute legends came out of this state; Ice-T, Tupac, NWA, Snoop Dogg, E-40, just to name a few. I would bet almost every rap fan has at least one Cali rapper on their top 10 rosters.

The State Of Underground Hip-Hop In California

I just want to start this by paying respects to an upcoming California rapper, Willie Bo. The Vallejo rapper was shot by police officers 25 times on February 9th, after he fell asleep waiting in a Taco Bell drive-thru.

Thizz In Peace Willie Bo

With roots stemming from gangster rap and G-funk to the hyphy movement, there’s a massive amount of independent hip-hop in California. The scene is so diverse that really establishing who is the dopest is entirely subjective. You could put together a top ten list for every subgenre of hip-hop with artists based just in California.

Respect My Region recently put together a list of the top 5 rappers coming out of Southern California like, Roddy Ricch, Real J Wallace, and JMIN. We also took a look at some of the upcoming rappers from the Bay Area, like, Tay Mackin, P-Lo, and Saweetie.

I’m hearing about underground hip-hop shows in California every day on social media. There’s always something going on. This is one of those states where I don’t really need to explain the dynamic of the community. Nobody is really questioning where the rappers are in Cali.

I just want to give Y’all a bunch of names of people that I’m fucking with. So real quick like, here are so of the more established names that I’ve been rocking with. Then keep scrolling for some of the super underground cats that I dug up and found through word of mouth.
