Travis Thompson has some serious magic about him right now. Anyone versed with Seattle’s hip-hop scene has heard the chubby kid from Ambaum lighting the music scene on fire with skilled lyricism and catchy hooks that sell out benchmark venues like Neumos and Showbox Market.
Thompson and his videographer Dylan Fout created a visual embodiment of his debut album YOUGOOD?. They sold out a movie theater in downtown Seattle for the premiere, not many rappers can say they made a movie and sold out a theater by the time they were 22.
Thompson hit another benchmark in his musical career, his first record deal. He announced he’s now part of Travis Scott’s record label Epic Records. His independent movement captured Seattle’s heart and is now on the path to capture a national audience. He stopped by Kube 93.3 to talk about his upbringing, heritage, the Seattle scene and the impact of his record deal.
Travis Thompson Freestyle on Bootleg Kev and DJ Hed 92.3
Thompson didn’t leave Bootleg Kev and DJ Hed’s interview without spreading knowledge about Seattle’s budding hip-hop scene. He also dropped a freestyle session for the ages and announced his newest project the Runaways EP.
Thompson seems to make his biggest plays in the biggest stages. When the lights are at their brightest, he never hesitates to shine love on Seattle culture and his Ambaum family. His presence is a welcome dichotomy to the mumble-money-rap shit that’s taken mainstream audiences attention away from lyrically driven hip-hop music.
