Following the release of his recent single “Ain’t Shit”, Travis Thompson is back with his new track and accompanying music video “Bad Apples,” a fun, catchy track about his beginnings getting into trouble as a kid, and the lesson of people around him changing when his rap career blew up. “Bad Apples” shares many stylistic and sonic tendencies with Thompson’s last release “Ain’t Shit” – namely, his creative lyrical flow – along with crisp percussion and a light synthesizer heard above.
Always a common theme in his music, Thompson stays close to his roots – this time, taking a positive spin on how he came out on top after his struggles as a “bad apple” in his youth. One of the main stylistic highlights that sets him apart from other artists in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest is his ability to spin his difficult experiences into a work of art through his music, thanks to his creative and fun delivery of his messaging.
His creative storytelling and upbeat vibe welcomes his fans to hear his story through his music, carrying listeners through the highs of “Put the block on my sleeve/Throw some rocks on my teeth” and the lows of “Taken from my classmates thinking if I can’t afford it/Then why should he get to have it.” Through it all, Thompson’s fans come out in droves on Twitter to support his story and his massive success as an up-and-coming PNW artist.
The video itself is a campy take on the themes in the video, playing off of the “all bark, no bite” line in the chorus with Thompson and his friends running a dog walking stand on the side of the road. The video showcases Thompson’s creative skills as a co-director for his own music video, touching on different ways Thompson gets into trouble with both the law and with the other adult figures in his life. As an added element of fun to the creative venture, Thompson shared on his Twitter that his fans were tasked with bringing their dogs to the filming of the music video, where Thompson struggled to reel them in and maintain composure while rapping for the camera.
“Bad Apples” is a phenomenally catchy, relatable track that showcases Thompson’s creativity, and the accompanying music video only underlines the hard work put into this hit track.
