Despite Kendrick Lamar’s departure from Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) last year, the independent record label might still drop material by him. Earlier this morning, CEO Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith responded to fans on Twitter regarding his plans for the year, and in doing so, teased new music from Black Hippy.
For those who weren’t around for the early TDE years, Black Hippy is a collective comprising South LA rappers Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, Jay Rock and Ab-Soul. Because they formed in 2008, before any of them blew up, it wasn’t considered a supergroup at first. Of course, the idea of the four being part of the same unit is overwhelming today.

Though the group has never released an album or EP together, the members have been featured on each other’s solo releases and remixes. The 2016 remix of ScHoolboy Q’s “THat Part” is perhaps their most famous hit, though fans of 2010s hip-hop tend to cherish any of the rare releases by the decade’s all-star starting four.
Based on Top Dawg’s tweet, it now seems like a complete body of work by Black Hippy might finally be on the horizon. When a fan asked if we’ll ever get another release from the group, he responded with optimism.

Following the release of Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers in 2022, Lamar announced that he would be leaving Top Dawg Entertainment. Considering the rest of Black Hippy chose to stay, fans have wondered what this meant for the group’s future. Whereas it is still unclear if Top Dawg’s tweet referred to music from the vault or fresh material, it’s safe to the hip-hop community will gladly accept either.
