On Thursday December 7th, The Thesis celebrated three years of monthly hip-hop showcases at Kelly’s Olympian in downtown Portland. We Out Here, and Vortex Magazine brought out a wicked line-up for this celebration. I was stoked to go down to Oregon for the weekend and meet the hip-hop heads in our sister city.

Detroit’s Ty Farris was headlining alongside Portland’s own producer Trox. The duo put out Room 39 together, and got the chance to perform together for Thesis. Trox’s sampling is so unique and intriguing, it makes the perfect companion to Ty’s sharp bars. Seattle’s favorite step-brothers, Kung Foo Grip, tore up the stage. Their energy was still high from dropping their latest single “Mic Check.”

Also on the bill, Cool Nutz, the O.G. of Portland hip-hop himself. Active since the early 90’s he co-founded Jus Family Records, and the Portland Oregon Hip-Hop Festival. He’s a major pillar of their scene, and I always enjoy watching his set. Other local cats $QVTCH, sxlxmxn (formerly Stewart Villain), and resident DJ Verbz rounded out the line-up.
The atmosphere inside of Kelly’s, and the enthusiastic crowd made me feel right at home. Portland will definitely be seeing more of me as I explore their hip-hop music scene.
